I've noticed a lot of blurry low-res avatars in the forum and thought you guys might appreciate a simple guide to having sharp looking avatars.

Step 1.   Stop uploading your avatar directly to the MLG.

This is where the problem originates from. You can only upload 75x75 icons and then the MLG site blurs the image up even further. Hosting a remote avatar will save you the step of having to shrink your image and your avatar will look so much nicer for doing it.

Step 2.   Adjust image shape & size.

OK, I just said you don't have to adjust size but if you already have to edit the image to make it more square, then you might as well optimize the size of the picture while you're at it. I'd say anything between 150x150 and 300x300 is a good ratio between resolution and file size.

Step 3.   Find a free image hosting site.

Here's the site I use to host images.  http://imageshack.us/ You can register to use imageshack for free since you won't be hosting tons of large files. You could also use your own site or any other site that gives you a direct URL to your image.

Step 4. Upload Image

Pretty self explanitory. Click upload image tab, click browse, select image, and upload.

Step 5. Copy Image URL

This is probably the trickiest part, and really, it's not that hard. When you upload the image, be sure to copy the image detail labeled "Direct Image Link"

The URL should look simething like this "http://img825.imageshack.us/im…..bigboy.png"

Step 6. Paste the image URL into The MLG Member Profile Page.

You go to the same Update Avitar page you would normally directly upload your avitar image to.

Just below the section labeled Upload An Avitar is a section labeled Select Remote Avatar

All you have to do is past in the image URL into the Select Remote Avatar section, clicl update profile in the bottom left hand corner, and refresh the page.

Then go check out your fancy schmancy crisp and clean avatar in the forums.

Well done! That's a swank looking new avatar you got there mate!

Great tutorial Todd.

I've relocated this post to the Forum Support Section, as it fits like a glove smile

I just stumbled across this. Thanks for the heads up. I had the blurry avatar, sorted now. I just linked to my twitter ppic. Why the hell does the MLG site only accept such a tiny avatar and then upscale it anyway? Get those boffins in the lab to cook up a 150x150 avatar limit instead and this will be sorted rofl
