The BF3 beta date is 29 Sep 11 – that's now official apparently. The min spec for the PC is also out – looks quite reasonable. Details here, but essentially:
"The Battlefield 3 multiplayer beta will be available for the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, the Xbox 360 videogame and entertainment system and PC. Gamers who pre-order the digital PC version of the game at Origin (powered by EA) will be granted early access to the beta starting on September 27, 2011. In addition, all customers that pre-ordered a Limited Edition of Medal of Honor will also receive early access to the beta starting on September 27, 2011.
Gamers in the beta can also log onto Battlelog, the game's free social media network that allows gamers to communicate and compete with friends, track their stats and share their progress. Battlelog extends the in-game experience to be accessible anywhere, whether on a PC, console or handheld device.
Players are also invited to join the EA Gun Club for the latest shooter news, and to receive in-game benefits including access to the M1911 pistol and distinct badges in Battlefield 3. The M1911 pistol will also be available to registered Battlefield veterans."
It's running until 10th Oct. 2 weeks of madness! Bring it on…….

First impressions:
Same solid team game play and controls feel very tight (dive to prone feels really nice, as does actually seeing a set of legs when your leaping over walls) as expected but its hard to judge in any detail as the level in the beta has no vehicles or sprawling open landscapes which is 80% of the Battlefield experience.
Frostbite 2 destruction is impressive as far as you can tell without tanks to blast away building walls and the weapons sound and look phenomenal, especially once you get down into the underground station with the echo and re-verb.
I have to say though I think after watching all the trailers I have over hyped in my own mind what the 360 is capable of and as nice as the graphics are the resolution just isn't there and whilst it looks nice and is a definite step forward, at the same time it looks a little underwhelming, crawling through bushes your still faced with clumps of pixelated textures. Inevitably after playing Bad Company 2 at 1600 x 800 with x8 AA and all the bloom effects on the PC everything on the 360 looks very… low resolution lol
The other thing is, having played BC2 and BF2 on the PC for the last few weeks to get into the swing of things, the drop from 64 players to 24 on the 360 is really…. erm…. noticeable.
All in all, looks and plays well and looking forward to Thursday to get my hands on the PC Beta now to see the differences for myself

Downloading it on the PC now. They really changed the map. No LAV anymore, so all the roads and open area's you used to attack over are now so full of scenery that it would make any vehicals impossible to drive. To be honest thought its probably a good thing. People used to just drive down to one of the ncom stations get out and let it be stolen by the defenders, making it totally impossible for the attackers.
Really can't wait to get stuck in again. Currently on 62% downloaded… Might get a couple of games in before i go to bed. Not really a 48 hour head start though…. seeing as im spending the first 24 hours downloading it. Apparently the full game with be pre-loadable though so that's always a bonus.
The one thing i really remember from the alpha was the sound being utterly phenomenal. Can't wait ^_^

as much of you know i am a big battlefield fan so when i woke up this morning thinking awesome i be getting into the beta for bf3 so ran to my computer like a kid these on xmas and what do i see not one email from ea with a beta key so i waited and waited now it is 10pm still no key
checked i did everything right that all the ticks were in the right boxes and if my online pass was fine on my copy of medal of honor in which i bought day 1 to get a tier 1 edition to get into the beta but still noting
thats when i got the idea i would ask twitter these are the people i asked now the funny bit with this person i sent a tweet and no reply at all but there followed me after couple minutes but still no response
then i tried there are senting the same automated tweet to everyone with a link to a site do you qualify in which i do so how do i contact you by going to the same twitter account but that is where i have just come from or i could chat with a automated bot on ea service origins which is no help if you are prime console user
so my last hope my final round in the chamber is pretty much asking people on twitter i even tried @cowfishdreams in which is Xbox Social Media Editor she said contact
i know this is a long shot but if anyone has a spare code kicking about i be very thankful i could wait for thursday but i am big battlefield fan starting from bf 1942 all the way up to bf f2p

Had a go on 360 beta tonight – looking pretty good so far – but why did dice give us the level that is closest to COD – no vehicles , small map..maybe trying to entice some of the MW3 market?

I'm stuck in a hotel in the Fens so my boy is using my beta key. All that playing of MoH was for nothing!!
Will be downloading the open beta for a weekend of nonsense though.

I've never played a BF game and was looking forward to this, but I have to admit that I'm a little disappointed with my first impressions. Problem is that I can't quite put my finger on why, possibly it's because I've seen it all before and it hasn't done anything that would make it stand out from the rest or is it the choice of map/game type.

Played the beta for a couple of hours and its growing on me, at first I was cursing the feel, this is more COD than BF, though not quite "run and gun" a bit more patience and guile required. with this in mind the "beta" has opened up to me, run for cover, pick your shots, re-arm/heal your team mates ,take ground slowly. reminds me of BF2, eventuallly!

getting fed up of being picked off by recons, this demo is putting me off – think I may actually just stick with Uncharted 3. Plus, I am trying to platinum Homefront (actually quite enjoyable despite the reviews) and it's taking an age.

@Crayon
That's quite ironic, as I really enjoyed playing the recon class. Did pretty well as a sniper. I've never played a BC game before, but found it a refreshing change from COD and a more tactical experience. It has certainly made me more likely to buy it.

I'm enjoying the recon class as well – never really had much joy with it either in previous BF games or COD so it's a refreshing change. I like the lens flare showing you roughly where the buggers are as well!

This was their chance to sell Battlefield to the COD heads. They give us a taster of a game that COD already does.. and does it better. EA should have given us a Jet to play with, that so totally would have nailed it.
Battlefield is all about the vehicles and yet they demo'd a crap COD style map.. very disappointed.

Agreed Wind Junky!
This demo was rubbish, but like you said you can accept the drop in infantry quality for more variety in gameplay theough vehicles.
So why they chose a infantry only level / mode i don't know.
Bring on MW3

Doesn't seem to bad after playing a couple of rounds although i will reserve judgement until i have played with a squad who communicate!! (one of the most important aspects of the game for me if you want to be successful)
After playing the demo at the Expo last weekend which i didn't enjoy due to a crap controller for lack of sound i was happy to play it in the comfort of my own home and actually managed to kill someone.

Sadly its not about demoing the game to potential purchasers, its EA stress testing their servers to see how they run under load, whats glitching and breaking and how their Battlelog holds up in advance of launch further evidenced by the fact they are even opening the beta access to no Gold Live members… its all about the numbers.
I guess they are holding the big open landscapes, vehicles and planes back as they will be the headline grabbers when the game launches day one and don't want to have peoples enjoyment of the biggest and most important parts of the game marred by glitches before launch.
The PC version looks utterly beautiful with the settings on ultra and the 64 player makes the 360 24 player version feel almost deserted when I switch back, just a shame almost every game I have played so far has been me as Assault and the rest of my team consisting of 31 recons

like shat said it is more of a stress test on previous titles dice and ea have had problems on servers on day 1 launches also my theory on the infantry only map is so it is more appealing to call of duty players to catch some more sales

There's a danger in reading too much into what's in the beta imho…it's a beta! I got about 3 hours in at the weekend, and it's really grown on me. There's a large community already building around the game in terms of squad play, leagues etc etc, which is something that COD doesn't really have to the same extent, and which is something that the Battlefield games are well known for. I'm more than happy to put up with a few niggles for the community side of things.

Not a great fan of Rush mode, Conquest is where it's at for me. Giving us a map with vehicles and choppers would have been a much sounder way to stress test the servers.
I know it's just open beta.. designed to weed out glitches etc, but I still think they failed. All my hardcore COD friends were in agreement at work. I tried to tell them that it's all about the vehicles and squad tactics, but the beta just strengthened their 'battlefield is shit' argument.

Yeah its fun. I hit level 24 the other night but came back home tonight and decided *I can't be arsed to play BF3 beta anymore* so yeah….. think im done with that map. Will wait until the full game is released + i can get a squad of my friends together that actually communicate. The squad system in the beta simply does not work. 90% of the games i play, the squad leader does not mark an objective which means that people are just running around doing what they want and missing out on the extra 20 points every time they kill someone in the objective area.
So yeah it's fun and has captured the battle in battlefield….. however its missing the field part, which is where the vehicals come in. One map with one mode isn't enough for me. ROLL ON THE 28TH!

The whole squad issue seems to be a hot potato at the moment – let's face it, proper squad play (and of course vehicles!) are what sets the game apart. In-game squad management does seem to be coming in though, according to this blog anyway.

Well after waiting i managed to get a play with the Open Beta at last, and…..
Did not enjoy it one little bit :-(
Not even quite sure what it was that I didn't like, and maybe I just never gave it a long enough try (maybe I should give it one more chance over the weekend)
Although I think I may have to give it a try on the PC, but really don't think I will be getting this for the xbox.
