good question.
I've only played the first one and the fifth one.
I don't really want to go back to the days of the first one, but I very much enjoyed 5.
Although I didn't play 4 (which I know is held high my many), 5 worked for me as a perfect action game with really fun co-op. Perhaps not as fun with the AI partner, but Phizzy and I nailed the whole thing on hard over a few nights, just missed out getting 1000 gamerscore.
I watched the trailer for 6 today, I can only assume they are keeping to the action over "old school"? horror pace. But I'm fine with that, with my attention span I'd much prefer a 28 days later to a Dawn of the Dead. But thats just me

ive played 2,4 and 5. love the games, 4 was by far the best game so far in my opinion.
5 was a good game, the co-op was definately a good way of playing, i never completed it alone due to the AI being quite useless! but it wasnt as jumpy and creepy as resident evil 4 so lost a bit of the "resident evilness" (rubbish word but not sure how to describe it!) :-)
i'm not sure how this game is going to be, but if u want the slightly creepier slower paced resident evil i would play 4, but 5 is also a very good game.

Played zero, 1, 2, 4 and 5. I'd have to say that Resi 4, on the Wii, has to be my favourite. The controls were perfect, it had an engaging story and it's a really pretty game. And I loved the merchant.
Got some rare things on sale… stranger.

Im a big fan of the series although i couldnt get into 5… that reminds me i need to go back and give that a go. Anyway, i'd have to say 2 and 4 of my favourites. I think 2 is more of a nostaliga thing but i really enjoyed that game and 4 is great too.

Res 4 by a country mile in my opinion..played it on the game cube and Wii and loved both versions.I was really disappointed in Res 5 and the only other version that I really enjoyed was Res 3 ..Nemesis.

I've played all of them Zero, 1 2, 3, Code Veronica, 4 and 5. My favourite was 4 Wii Edition. The controls work great, the game is still atmospheric and at the time the graphics were excellent. 4 was also the last Resident Evil that had Shinji Mikami directing, he originally created the series. The only complaint I have about 4 is that it could've had more puzzles.
5 for me was very bad and I don't like the looks of the Chris portion of 6.

Ive played 1,2,3,4,dead aim and delved into the rest a little.
4 is the best, fact but i hold nemisis quite dearly as it was the first i played.
Id probs recommend playing 4 or 5 but know that 5 is more of a gears clone.
Im personally really looking forward to plsying racoon city, that game has gone from looking like a complete failure to one hell of a spin off.

Ive played them all in some form or another although it is probably worth pointing out that Ive only ever completed 2 (twice) and 5.
2 is my favourite which is an unpopular answer I know. Its a time and place thing. If I had played 4 when it came out I might consider that my colour my opinion but I dont find it particularly atmospheric when compared with 1,2,3 or even Zero.

4 was my favourite, such a great new direction for the series and a great setting. Although playing 5 on two different systems, aside from the co-op mechanic it offered nothing new or better. In fact, the QTEs were incredibly pointless. Compared to Dead Space, the decision to not enable a player to walk AND shoot made it seem very dated.

I've played all Resident Evil titles I think. And I mean all
of them, even the old Gameboy one. I've always thought Resident Evil 2 was the
best but I haven't played it in years and so nostalgia may be clouding my
judgement. And whilst 4 was awesome I found myself enjoying 5 more. I've pours
countless hours into 5 and replayed in a good half a dozen times.

Resident Evil 2 for me.
Took the formula to Racoon City, introduced new characters but still retained the emphasis on survival and puzzles.
RE4 was a change of direction and it's a great game ,but it's too concerned with action.
The best bits of the series were when you had to run around with nothing but the knife because you ran out of bullets.

Resi 2 all the way for me. All the others are pale imitations imho.
The first time one of the licker things jumped through a window is a moment of terror I won't soon forget.
Classic even with the clunky controls.
I think the new Resi rpg style game is set in Resi 2 time?

Resi 1 for me is easily the best, i played it soooo many times! in fact, i think i could still talk someone through it. i could actually write a walkthrough lol
@baron, you should definitely play 4. and 5 if you havent yet, i would agree that the wii version is the best. not sure i would want to pay £15 for it at present, if you have an old gamecube or ps2 it can be picked up for very cheap and would be well worth the time dude

Played the first 3 a lot, 4 a bit and own but have never played 5 (yet – it's in the pile of shame). Played the lightgun spin-off, Survivor for a few minutes also. I also have the remake of Resi 1 for the Gamecube.
I have 2 favourites in the series, for different reasons – first and foremost, I love the very first Resident Evil. Although the dialogue is beyond ropey, (which does make it quite lovable really), the graphics poor, the controls…unusual and the pacing slow, it remains the first and only game that has made me physically jump.
The story behind it is that me and a mate had gone two's on buying the game (we'd each contributed half of the purchase price, for those unfamiliar with nineties midlander phrases). We were taking turns playing for a few minutes at a time with the other providing useful hints / suggestions. It was still early in the game when we walked down the infamous corridor…when the zombie dogs burst through the window, making both myself and my mate leap about 8 feet in the air whilst simultaneously offering up a fair and varied selection of rather rude words.
Having both started gaming in the days of the Spectrum, we'd never had something like that happen before in a game and so it caught us both completely by surprise. One hell of a gaming moment and one I'll never forget.
Back on topic, gaming-wise, I found Resi 2 to be the most enjoyable. Something about playing the game from 2 intersecting perspectives interested me and it also widened the Resi universe, so to speak. Not too sure about what I've heard about Resi 6 though - sounds a bit 'Evil Call of Resident Duty' to me. Each successive game in the series seems to take a step further away from the whole survival horror genre, which I find a little sad and uninspiring.

I've played all of them excluding the Handheld games, even the awful on rail shooter for the PS2 (Resident Evil Survivor).
In my opinion, from 4 onwards, it wasnt the same franchise. Same name, but the game had become something else focusing more on action-horror, than survival-horror.
Thats not a bad thing though.
In that vien, I would say 2 for the cross path character storyline from the original survival residents, and 5 from the Action residents.
It had everything 4 had, but improved on it greatly.

Number 1 will always be my favorite. I played it soooooooo much back when it was released I honestly think I could play it blind folded even now. The reason I bought a GameCube was because of the re-make which was also awesome.

2 and 4 for me.
2 made me crap myself – the bit in the interegation room with the two-way mirror. So much so it was the last "horror" game I'll ever play. 4 was just a great romp – not scary in any way but superb gameplay. Played it round a mates house and stopped off at my local independant games shop on the way home to pick up a 2nd Gamecube and copy of the game. Played it solidly for 2 days. Brilliant.

My favourite would have to be Resi 2. The 2 playable characters with intertwining stories, truly scary soundtrack, GIANT crocodile, great plot, it had a ton of memorable moments. Got high hopes for 6 but it looks like it's going for more action and less horror like Resi 5 and that was a big letdown for a lot of people

Picked up Resident Evil 4 for the Wii yesterday for a fiver, so I might give that a go. Meant to be the definitive version of Resi 4 apparently.
If I ever get round to playing it, I'll update this post*
*I wouldn't hold your breath; my pile of shame is….extensive…
