Dear Esther was release on steam recently and it is a brilliant piece of work…not a game really but an audio and visual experience.

Daren mention in the podcast …

Just wondering what other people think about it? Anyone else love it? Anyone
dislike/hate it?

I bought this not realising what it was. It was a OoooooO shiny *clicks buy*
situation. The first thing i did is try and figure out how to jump then go
looking for a weapon…first 30 seconds. Then spent the next 2 hours jaw almost
hanging stunned by the narration/story telling, soundtrack(which you can
download free i think, please correct me if im wrong) and the awesome visuals
that made me stop and stare.

Basically I was supprised at what it was but loved it anyway! I'm looking forward to more "stuff" like it. smile

Reeaallly interested in this when Daren mentioned it on t'podcast but not sure if my archaic PC hardware would run it?  Apparently based around old Source engine so sounds like it would be wasn't convinced when looked at specs…

From the demo and screens I've seen it really is a merging of art and game.  A refreshing change!

Couldn't decide whether I'd like it or not but figured "what the hell, it's only £7". I'll give it a try later hopefully.

I dont know what i think about it to be honest. I recorded my playthrough of it but Im debating whether to put it up on youtube or not as I really dont know how interesting it will be to watch.

Is it just a pile of pretentious wank, or is there a deep meaningful sombre toned piece playing out through it?

It stayed with me for a few hours after playing it for sure, while I tried to piece together what its actually about. Is it worth £7? I doubt it, although I dont regret spending the money on it (weird as it sounds).

Just thought I'd quickly post that 'Dear Esther' is now available on OnLive for those of us who lacked a decent rig to play it on when originally released.

The only downside is that it's part of the playpack (monthly subscription) rather than a standalone purchase. On the plus side, you can demo it for free and, if you do sign up for the playpack, you can play the original Witcher as it's also part of the pack (more rampaging and rodgering anyone?)

Definitely going to give the demo a try…

Gave the Onlive demo ago, thanks for the heads up MaGe1974. it's interesting as a piece of Non-linear narrative story telling. I always find it strange to be told tit bits of a story that has already been played out, I find myself searching every nook and cranny for objects that relate to the narrator's tale. That said having no personal interaction with the world makes it feel just a tad stale and I feel the Narration ideas Esther was trying to use were better explored in other such games as Bastion.

If you don't fancy buying it which is understandable try looking for a silent playthrough on youtube with out some annoying voice interjecting their own thoughts.

I wanted to love this game, but I just find it really impenetrable. The story doesn't suck me in, and whenever I sit down with it, it can't sustain my interest for more than a few moments. There was a good part though, where I actually jumped in my chair when I thought I saw a human shape in the distance, but it was just my mind playing tricks with me, because when I looked again, it was gone. smile
