Good afternoon ladies, gentlemen and Gun-Toting-Witches!

That's right, it’s been finally decided and its time to release this month's Game of the Month Club title on you all. Sorry for the delay but I’ve been asleep for 500 years and I’m not quite sure what is going on… Maybe you all could help me piece together my past?

We figured you deserved a more action-packed, adrenaline-filled, spark plug-licking game compared to last month’s effort.

So. Get your initial thoughts down here now; let us know what you think of the choice. Then. Tell us what you think and feel. Is this a Marmite game? Is it a mixture of eye candy and eye crack for the senses? Or is it just weird.

Unleash you feet-guns and weird hair!!!

Ooh nice choice…

Played this on PS3 shortly after release time courtesy of my game rental service of choice.  Was convinced I was going to hate Bayonetta on account of it, on the surface, ticking a lot of the boxes on my 'things that make me not like games' list BUT ended up sending rental back and buying the darn thing.

This is a game that just keeps on giving – OTT in every way and with finishing moves that'll make you wince!

And the homage to my absolute favourite 80s arcade classic title near the end sealed the deal.

Looking forward to playing it again, perhaps on a sliiiiightly higher level of difficulty.  Have my gorgeous hard cover collectors edition strategy guide by my side and a recently purchased sleeveless (and bargainous) 360 version that's been ready to hit the tray for the past month or two.  Heard a lot about the PS3 version being a hacked up port of the 360 edition so will be interesting to compare…

See you all at the Gates of Hell smile

Nice choice heard a lot of good things about it. However since I lack a console I'm going to have to sit this one out (Mafia 2 on my pile shame will have to do me) hope its more fun than the last choice, I hear Silent Otto may need therapy after Kane and Lynch.

Well I know very little about Bayonetta…..

Is it a fighting game with some fit bird (sure that's what Mat used to say)

But, I'm gonna have a look at picking this up before the weekend and having a blast :-)

Bayonetta ordered,

Will probably be with me by the end of next week. Leaves this week to complete the game whose name we shall never utter again. First rule of GOTM club. No one talks of 'the game' EVER again.

Made a start tonight smile.

Rushed through my first playthrough on PS3 but this time making sure I watch the (sometimes lengthy) cutscenes and taking more notice of the storyline (barmy tho it is).  Graphically, I think the game actually looks better in game than the cutscenes, v smooth and accompanied by the famous OTT music.

Having made it through the Prologue and Chapter 1, I have quickly rediscovered how much fun this game is.  Playing on Normal (I'll admit, I played Easy on PS3) and the game definitely feels different this time round.  I need to make my combos and get the hell out of there rather than just standing toe to toe.  Have my favoured combos at the mo but there are so many hopefully I'll branch out a bit as I delve further into the game.

I'm in the some part of the game myself now.

Although I struggled to start the game.

First time around I did it on Normal, which has no auto mode, so I didn't want to drop down to easy as I want to re-learn those combo's.  So I put it on Hard… but thats a terrible idea – the final battle at the end of chapter 1 after you first the first lot of little flying beggers has you up against 2 big hell dogs.  New Game+ it might be, but getting my ass whooped before I could work out the buttons wasn't fun.

I opted to start a whole new fresh game, on Normal again and go through it totally fresh – like you though I'm keen to TRY and understand this story line – I'm even making notes!

Might get involved with this, need to get the game first. Might be a daft question but how long will this month's game last until or is the plan to stop at start of January?

Normally we gather everyones thoughts and record the Audio DLC to GotM about the second weekend into the next month. So, you have about three weeks. I'm yet to pick it up so dont worry. awesome

OK

Playing PS3 version, graphically looking good so far and as I'm a total newbie to this type of game, playing on easy. it is very Devil May Cry ( which I dabbled in, but wasn't for me), the combos are easy to put together and I got a silver for the first mission. The story seems really manga/japanese so I'm surprised they have set it in Europe. A big 158 mb download before starting, and interested to know if there are any trophies?

A bit of a treat so far,

Otto

Hi all,

I established that there are trophies, I am still on level 1. I can see why this game is poplar with blokes, it's loaded with double extenders and crotch shots are obligatory at every turn. The enemies are interesting, and in some ways it reminds me of a JRPG, a bit like eternal sonata, or enchanted arms. Story, the area to UN around, activate combat section and then a cut away to a combat section. As I said, never played this style of game before, but it's a good intro.

Hi all,

Chapter 2 completed, but it's a bit of a mash feat. I read that the creator figured it would take 12 hours on easy, then he expected you to go back to get the better grades like DMC. The story seems a bit odd (to say the least) , but the enemies are massive, sometimes it's a bit like God of War with the press button to evade and kill. There are collectibles to find and potions to mix, I've just upgraded my guns and gained a sword. The learning curve is gentle but I think going back and playing it on normal and hard will make it a different game.

One question, when you go back and replay a chapter do you keep you upgrades? I just did the prologue again to gain 20000 rings (very Sonic – sea) and wondered if I cn grind the game on easy gain the upgrades and then go again on normal but with an enhanced character.

One bonus game – spot the film reference!!! I've seen face-off and goodfellas but there is one scene where she's shootinga nd shouting guns and her accomplice is throwing more and more guns at her as she uses the ammo up – I am sure this is from a movie. Anyone in the community, enlighten me?

cheers

Otto

Would the guns ref be The Matrix?

As for new game plus and improving on scores… thats a little tricky to get right.

I did notice when I was in an end of level menu (shop, save and exit), if you hit the bumper for the sub menu – I've found the grid which shows progress on all levels on all difficulties – however I'm still not 100% certain how to work that system.

If your playing on Normal like I did first time around and this time… then you can be assured that there is a challenge to be found with this game….. seriously, if you're going to NG+ on hard….. take this advise and do it soon – I left it for an hour and the opening level kicked my ass (didn't help that I had zero idea how to use all the weapons and moves I'd collected through my first play through).

Finally – if your enjoying all the references, wait until you they throw old sega titles at ya smile

Playing on normal and completed the prologue, and chapters 1 and 2. This is one seriously weird game (but in a good way). I had absolutely no idea what was going on in the very first interactive sequence (pre-prologue). I am enjoying the combat, trying to learn different moves/combos (there appears to be hundreds!); it's a real treat to the eyes and ears. Stand out moment so far was the fight against Jeanne when you first use the witch power to walk on walls, that took a bit of getting used to. Quite enjoy the shooting gallery mini-game as well.

Negatives are the lengthy cut scenes; they are entertaining enough, but lengthen the gap between action sequences. The load times are a bit of a pain (playing on ps3), there's even some loading time when you pick-up certain items in game.

However, loving the excessive crotch shots and climax moves. Do you think the developers were smoking something when they made this game?smile

Right, bit late but finally got Bayonetta loaded up last night and the start was superb.

The problem was (and I may be been a bit simple here) but when the prologue started (in the grave yard) I was then quickly transported to a red room and told to press Y (Beautiful) but that just seems to go on forever :-s

Well I turned it off at that point and not switched it back on yet. Mind I was having my New Year drink last night and maybe that was the problem lol

*Ignore that, playing it sober now and worked out that I need to press next :-S lol

to start, I think I should state have a chequered history with this game.

I love the genre, being a fan of GOW, DMC, Dynasty Warriors and a lot of other Hack and Slash games that fail to come to mind at this time, but for me, Bayonetta seemed to tick a lot of boxes that made me NOT want to purchase it.

This is not as much for what the game did promise, which seemed to be gratouitous crotch and ass shots of a virtual woman, but was mainly due to the absolutely abysmal DMC3.

Not fair, I know, but regrettably that is how my mind worked.

fast forward 12 months, and after hearing Matt raving about this game on a few occassions, and it being picked as game of the month, I pick it up for a bargain price of £6.99.

How wrong I was….

Maybe its the couple of years away from the genre, but this game is actually really enjoyable.

Influences of this game must be listed as well, the obvious ones being DMC for the style and sheer over the top plot and Max Payne for its obligatory Slo-Mo triggers.

But the nod's to Dante's Inferno (the Divine comedy poem, not the dire game) and games such as Outrun and Afterburner in the motorbike and missile sections are a definite wink to the Sega greats of days past.

Some of the gunfight sections between Bayonetta and Jeanne also smack heavily of an influence from Equilibrium, which is a pedigree that this game should be rightly proud.

The basis of the totally over the top plot, is that you play as Bayonetta, a witch, who in a deal with the demons from Inferno, must kill angels from Paradiso daily to prevent being dragged into Inferno for eternal suffering. The opening credits also reveal that in the past, a member of the Umbran Witches and their counterpart, the Luman Sages (who draw power from Paradiso) sired a child, which was a long held taboo.

One Medieval witch hunt later, and it appears you are the last Umbran Witch, having been buried at the bottom of a lake for several centuries. This has the added benefit, that Bayonetta has lost most of her memories, and so is also discovering the story alongside you as you progress through the game.

I played this game to the end and as is tradition with a lot of Japanese based plots, I still had little idea what the hell was going on throughout the game by the end of it…

The soundtrack, I can understand could be a marmite aspect, you will either love it or hate it. Personally, I loved it. The Brenda Lee rendition of "fly me to the moon" fits perfectly alongside the pop/funk soundtrack, although I did feel that it was probably slightly over-played. I cannot fail to mention, the over the top dance video at the end of the game, which would have put a grin on the face of any pre-pubescent boys who played this game, and maybe a few of their older counterparts (looking at you Matt…)

Gameplay varies little, apart from the afore mentioned Outrun and Afterburner tribute levels, this is your generic hack and slash.

Initially, during the opening credits, you have a fighting section where if you have never played the game, you will button mash to death.

You are then thrown into a tutorial section, where against a red screen and infinitely spawning enemies, you can practice the combo abilities to your hearts content.

once you are fully armed, its on to the main even, despatching angels. string together enough combos without getting hit, and you will charge your Torture ability. This, is a high damage attack, which takes you outside of combat to focus solely on the enemy you are targetting when it is activated. These tortures are also varied by the rank of angel you are fighting, but you will see them all countless times before the end of the game.

Another arrow in Bayonetta's quiver is Witch time. This slow motion trigger, is activated by dodging an enemy attack at the last second, which slows time to allow you to unleash hell (sorry for the pun) on the unsuspecting angels.

Finally, you have the true beauty that is the boss fights. These take obvious inspiration from God Of War's epic boss fights by the sheer scale of size, but the premise remains largely the same as the combat throughout the game.

Fire off your combos until you are prompted to execute your Torture ability, while ocassionally participating in quick time events during the fight.

Each of the Torture's this time, are based on Wicked Weave, which is Bayonetta's ability to channel demons into the world through the medium of her hair.

These moves look fantastic, with huge Wolves, Crows and even Spiders forming in the sky looming over the angels and descending on them to finish them off and drag them to the inferno, as payment for Bayonetta's demon cohorts.

It will please the boys, that this is when Bayonetta is at her most naked, as not only does her hair form demons, but it also makes up the onepeice catsuit she wears throughout. (again, Far Eastern culture has left me at a loss).

In addition to all of the above, each chapter is broken down into sections, which are ranked, and then an overall rank and leaderboard position is derived from your speed, combo and ability to avoid being hit, and this game cries out for you to give it "one more go" even after the credits have rolled, which I have to mention appears to happen at least 4 times as the game has one of the longest, and most epic endings to a game I have played since Final Fantasy X.

This game, can be played as a button masher, but like all of the games I mentioned at the start, to get the most out of it you have to learn the combo's to get the most joy out of this game.

To end on a quote from Luca, one of the secondary characters from the game…"I've got to give you credit Bayonetta, you never cease to impress…."
