Off the top ofmy head…

Resident Evil – Yes, video games CAN cause rectal prolapse

Wipeout – For its sub culture, music and marketing.

Monster Maze on ZX81 – first 3D shooter?

Guitar Hero….gave birth to RockBand and awesome parties.

Don't forget Mario 64. The game that effectively killed 2d platforming and perfected 3d platforming in one swoop.

GTA3 – gaming would never be the same again. Historically, it's important to note that it was originally released not long after 9/11 and the terrorist attack on the twin towers.

Cholo on Amstrad CPC464, and I suppose other systems. Open world. Very limited guidance and you were left to just figure it out on your own. Probably the first game of it's type at that time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C…..ideo_game)

"Cholo's gameplay is similar to that of Paradroid, but with wireframe graphics. The story is set out in a novella which was included in the game's packaging. Following a nuclear war, humanity is trapped underground by a robot defence system that rules the irradiated surface. Your character assumes control of a robot drone, transmitting to a terminal below ground, and is given the task of freeing the trapped humans."

Jim,

I would highly advise reading Ready Player One! by Earnest Cline.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ready-…..1846059372

The whole theme of this book is what you are doing your paper on.

Even better, listen to the audio book. Will Wheaton perfectly portrays a young cyber punk who thinks of himself as the ultimate authority on 80's pop culture & video games. Imageine that. awesome

Hmm, historic video games…

It would be impossible to ignore The last ninja. It was way ahead of any games on release in 1987 and got great reviews. Both games in the series where fantastic, the graphics where amazing at the time.

And lets mention Tekken. it wasnt the first fighting game but it certanly set a standard. The movement of the characters where brilliant and you had so many combos you had to cheat to figure them all out. I bought a magazine and practiced for a week, then i invited my mates overoh-yeah. Game was released in 1994

——————-

Final Fantasy series, especially FF7 was allso an experience i`ll never forget. At first glance i discarded the game only to rediscover it 3 months later and finding it to be one of the most memorable games i have ever played. Game was released in 1997

I could go on and on and on and…

Hi the book is called Vintage Games – the insider look at grand theft auto, super mario and the most influential games of all time. By Bill Loguidice and Matt Barton.

Their choices are:
Alone in the dark (1992)
Castle Wolfenstein (1981)
Dance Dance Revolution (1998)
Diablo (1996)
Doom (1993)
Dune II (1993)
Final Fantasy VII (1997)
Flight Simulator (1980)
Grand Theft Auto III (2001)
John Madden Football (1988)
Kings Quest (1984)
Myst (1993)
Pac Man (1980)
Pole Position (1982)
Sim City(1989)
Space Invaders (1978)
Street Fighter II (1991)
Super Mario 64/ Tomb Raider (1996)
Super Mario Bros (1985)
Tetris (1985)
The legend of Zelda (1996)
The Sims (2000)
Ultima (1980)
Ultima online (1997)
Zork (1980)

I hear lots of calls of bullshit, but the argument is that these games changed the world at their time, and anything that has come after has shinier graphics and new mechanics but is fundamentally the same. If your gunning for a distinction pick up replay, and the ultimate history of video games.

They are all available on kindle and vintage games has lots of hyperlinks and screen shots. It is a big ok though – and remember plagiarism is theft!!!!

Good luck, and why not see if the guys will let you post your work, it will probably be really interesting. I'd be interested anyway.

I'd have to say Elite on C64 in 1985 (I know it was originally for the BBC micro but the C64 version had Trumbles!), probably the first open world type game, where you were free to play the game as you wished, and no end goal was set (other than achieveing Elite status of course!) which was pretty revolutionary back in those days.

Revolutionary games… Like Adamski's choice of Monster Maze – I don't think you did any shooting though! For me, I reckon:

Manic Miner

Elite

Super Mario Bros

Tetris

Tomb Raider

Final Fantasy VII

GTA III

Shenmue

Half Life

Portal

I'll also offer Angry Birds. Love it or loath it, it has been revolutionary.
