Hey everyone

Just wanted to ask if anyone uses or knows of some good gaming headphones, as the only time i seem to get to game is at late at night due to young baby and have to keep the volume pretty  low.

Would be really interested to hear if anyone has had some good/bad experiences with any headphones.

Thanks

I opted for the turtle beach earforce x31's as they are around £60 and are wireless, I know that they do more expensive ones with surround etc etc, but I've found these to be excellent value for money.

I was lucky enough to pick up a pair of Turtle Beach PX21's at Eurogamer Expo for £65 (show special offer). I too have suffered with low gaming volumes for very similar reasons. These things are awesome, fit both the 360 and PS3, come with a Dolby processor box and sound fantastic. You can also hook them up to your PC, so long as you have an optical port. I think you can pick them up for under a £100 – but you are getting a decent 7.1 surround system for that price and no more nagging.

I've got a set of Turtle Beach x41's (wireless surrond sound) and I can't rate them highly enough.  You can pinpoint people creaping up stairs behind you, reloading in the next room, just fantastic sound.  Pricy though.

I ssecond that. I've had turtle beach headphones for both 360 and ps3, and they worked well. Currently rolling with a pair of Px5, wireless babies, pricey but worth it.

Its a bit of a sore topic in my house right now, but I just got a set of PX5's, and fair play, they are pretty bloody awesome. Almost worth the amount of shit I am getting off the wife about it. Almost.

Santa just ordered me the Tritton AX720 set.

Here was my route to choosing…

Turtle Beach…the name I have heard banded around for years for gaming headsets.

Then up pop Tritton on my search for reviews.

Astro headsets also make an appearance in my search…very nice, but outside my budget.

I'm really not arsed about a wireless set…I don't want to have to rearrange shit in the house if there is a problem and fair play to the guy in our local gamestation, he said there were plenty of wireless sets returned due to interference.

Add to that the additional on cost of batteries (or initial outlay for rechargables).

Wired was the way to go for me…I can cope with the wires as whn I'm likely to be using them, no one will be about to trip over them.

Budget wise I started hitting at the AX720 or DX11 sets. I had a quick look at the AX Pros as they feature four seperate speakers in each can to replicate true dolby…but I kept reading about the fact that these smaller speakers could not compete with the single larger speaker..even though it was Dolby processing that creates a pseudo surround field.

It seemed to be 50/50 between Turtles and Trittons…and I have to admit to being draw aesthetically to the Trittons slightly more…and the majority of owners who had both made it their preference over Turtle sets.

Well, we shall see in the fullness of time and hopefully sometime between 6am on Chritmas day and midnight on the 31st December I will get to take them for a test drive.

Quite excited…I don't get new shiney things very often.

I already have a set of AX Pro's, which I (now) use for my PC up in the office. Of the two, I am slightly more impressed by the PX5's, but it could be a case of new car smell. Both are a fine headset.

Agreed. The Turtle Beach PX5's are awsome.

But you have to  a pretty big set of balls to justify spending that kind of money to your wife.

Hehehe…I went for the Tritton AX720s.

They are pretty hefty and seem to be built very well….the cups are quite small and I would suggest that if you have sizeable lugs, they might not fit as snug as they do over my dainty little ears.

I’ve not really had the chance to give them a full test over a prolonged session of gaming, but they worked very well with Skype.

(Once I figured out that I had the mute button activated…come on, we’ve all done it).

All I need it a Toslink splitter so I don’t have to keep swapping the optical cable over between these and my amp.

Does anyone have an input on the Turtle Beach XC1 headset? Basically, my setup doesn't allow for a normal set of headphones, lots of cable going through my wall into another room, everything is going through lots of switcher boxes (I use a lot of game recording hardware). However, I do want to improve the quality of sound from the default Xbox headset. So if anyone knows if the XC1s are better than the Microsoft microphone, or has a better product that does the same thing in mind, please let me know!

I just bought some AX720s and they are really good.  I also have sizable lugs, but they are still rather comfortable.

They work well on PC, 360 and PS3.  I am very happy with my (stupidly expensive) headphones.

I can't speak for the Turtle Beach sets, but the Trittons I have seem to have a much better mic than the wired and wireless Microsoft sets…imho.

I know that all the headsets need to have a cable connected from the headset to the controller, although there are some options (I think only with Turtle Beach) whereby you can purchase a blue tooth dongle that connects to the controller to replace a wire. The only 'odd' thing about the XC1's is that it only has one speaker…which also provides game sound….so you get voice chat and game sound through one ear…your other ear relies on sound coming from your TV/Speaker set up.

The only comment I have regarding my Tritton is that you cannot hear yourself speaking…I think that there are some TB's that provide this facility.

Do you need to be able to record the game chat (with your own voice too) as part of your game recording set up?

Well, I can kind of sort out recording my own voice, I have external stuff for that in my setup. The main problem with the normal Turtle Beaches/Tritons etc is that I'm a fair distance away from the Xbox and I don't really need/want the sound coming through the headset (I have a nice external surround sound setup for that) I just want the chat mic and headset to be clearer and better quality than the bog standard Microsoft headset smile

I have me a set of Tutrle Beach X1's Yes I know I'm rocking it old school wink

The mic is a pain in the ass now as the mini jack is going and gives me a buzzing noise when I have a plug n play attached to the controller.

The Cable I got with these must be 5+ metres It's more then enough for any of my rooms.

3 years on and they still sound great(apart from the mic crackle and buzz, but I can unplug that) they are only stereo but do a great job of helping locate people in COD, and not wake the other half up or anyone else in the house for that matter.

My understanding is the X11's are the updated version of the X1's but they get my thumbs up.

Wow – I was at Eurogamer -if I'd known about the discounted price, I'd have probably traded up my existing X31s (which I have no issue with, I'd just like 7.1 but haven't yet been able to justify the expense)!

I've rocked Turtle Beach X41's in the past and thought they were great, but I would say, if you can afford it, Nothing compares to the Astro A40's. Treated myself last Xmas and haven't regretted it. While the X41's were good the sound quality of the Astro's is far superior.

Personally i would reccomend steering away from Turtle Beaches, ive had 2 pairs of PX21's break on me in 18 months and not thru mis-use. I always take good care of all my gaming equipment and the TB's were no exception, yet the first pair just stopped working altogether (no sound tho the mic still worked) and the second pair the right earcup fell off. Im now rocking a pair of Tritton Pros wich i got off Amazon for about £90 and theyve served me very well for for almost a year now. Im not saying TB's are rubbish by any means, i was very happy when they worked, the sound quality was brilliant. Maybe i was just unlucky but i personally wont be buying their equipment in the future.

OK I maybe stepping into Jaffa Cake – Cake or Biscuit territory but I am sniffing around some new headphones and keep flipping between some Turtle Beach or Tritton ones.

currently I have a pair of Sennheiser HD215 which dont have a mike but do flip up on one side DJ style so sometimes I have resorted to my headphones on one ear and my old plantronics Halo 2 mike on the other for multiplayer (I look the bomb I tell you) so was thinking of maybe switching up.

However I am pretty happy with my headphones in general so looked at the Turtle Beach surround sound processor box thingy but some reviews say its not as good as a dedicated set of headphones. So then you have these Tritton ones with loads of little speakers in it for true surround sound but some say they are not as good as one larger dedicated speaker and so on and so on.

I could save my shiny pennies and get something expensive but I know that most expensive does not always equal most good but I dont want to get something thats not really that much of a step up from what I have.

any advice would be most welcome. apologies for my wild thrashings but you can go round and round with these sorts of things.

I've had no trouble with my turtle beach headset. Either set of X41's and I love them but the build quality does leave something to be desired. Not that anything particularly wrong with them is just a feel a bit lightweight and plastiky.

But I'm definitely sold on the idea of having a good set of surround sound headphones and I don't think I could be without now. If this period break, or ever find a need to have a new set, then I'll probably be looking at a set of Tritons or maybe even something more "plush". I would have absolutely no problem justifying the price to myself – my missus may well disagree however.

I always thought the Turtle Beach ones were something to sell to kids in Game as thats where I first saw them and had not heard of the make but after further research see that they are a 'brand' for that sort of thing. I do like the look of the Trittons though maybe its the upside down Atari logo they use or something….

There is a mathamatical formula for working out how much you tell your wife something cost:

She asks you how much and you ask her back how much she thinks they cost.

you quickly minus about 5 to 10% from the figure she gave you and tell her thats how much it was.

and they she says well thats still alot and I dont know why you need another Game / Iron Man figure / Pair of Pants etc.

I was tempted by the Astro's…but my bank manager told me otherwise!

Very happy with my Tritton AX720's. Playing Dead Space 2 with them is quite an experience.

They dont deliver the sound stage that you would get from a 5.1 surround room speaker system, i.e. you know that the sound is being created right next to your ear rather than from speakers across the room, but it still delivers some very clever pseudo surround. Works great with skype too.

I do look a little bit like Lobot though (I have marginally more hair than him)…

I got X41s for Xmas this year. I had X1s which are brilliant but wanted surround sound.

My verdict?

They have a slightly cheap build quality visually, but appear very sturdy.

They are comfy, but not quite as comfy as my X1s.

Surround sound f**king rocks cool

Surround sound really f**king rocks!

Xbox chat can be a little crackly and I get occasional crackle on louder bass sounds, however I don't really notice anymore.

I can now accurately pinpoint the position of a helo in BF3, both direction and elevation, much better than when my 5.1 AV system is fired up and turned up loud, amazing seing as they are not true surround sound (by that I mean they do not have the 5 speakers that my AV system does)

I wouldn't go back to non surround.

ONE BIG WORD OF WARNING:

This I should think applies to all wireless headsets – RF interference can be an issue. I had my X41 transmitter about 1m from my xbox, which has a wireless adapter. They interfered with each other, the Xbox would drop off of xbox live and speeds were slow, and the sound quality on the X41s was poor. I bought extension leads and now the X41 transmitter is about 3m from the Xbox and everything is much improved. I have Fibre BB so I have an N type router which I now understand is meant to take up much more bandwith and is more prone to interference.

Summary?

I love my TBs, and they are outstanding for the price £90 Shopto.net, but from my research, the more expensive Astros might be worth a look if budget is not a consideration.
