I've seen the promo vid via another (and of course far inferior) gaming site. Involves a chap being rather over the top in his description of the new features and, for the main part, new ways of accessing the content that was already on Home previously. Home is still going to be seen as something that you do INSTEAD of gaming rather than something that enhances it.
The FPS element might be fun if you could get a commited room for MLG or similar but I expect it will just be the usual 'wait at the entrance and keep pressing buttons till you get let in'.
Just posted on the 'Skyrim' forum and it got me thinking 'How could Sony encourage gamers to go for their version over the competition?' (and I say this as someone who dearly loves both his 360 and PS3).
What if Home became like an umbrella of hubs for games where a social element could be built up simply to share experiences without ruining the SP experience? One you could dip into as and when you feel like it but far more integrated than what we have now which is predominantly mini games that win you avatar clothing in a mini world separate from the gameworld itself.
So, picture this. I'm actually playing Skyrim. Just put 2 hard hours plodding through the tundra and want somewhere to rest, take stock, chill out. I open a menu in the game, select 'Visit tavern'. This saves my progress and then throws me out to a Home area done up like a Tamriel tavern containing a few NPCs should I wish to stock up on lore or tales, other players resting their weary legs with which I can share my tales of daring derring-do and other little titbits like books or scrolls where players can leave ideas for successful recipes, advice etc.
Imagine it being like a grown up version of the Dark Soul Bonfire / message leaving idea…
I sup my beer, say my goodbyes and head back out into the night – Skyrim game loads back up and I continue from my last save…
This area could still be accessed via Home menus in the same way if required but having that (almost) seamless connection with the original game possibility would at least give Home more of a purpose. Skyrim remains a single player game (as it should be) but Home provides a worthy social element to the gaming if people want it.
Just the thoughts of a rambling mind but something like that would definitely sway my choice of platform.
