Can anyone offer words of wisdom on how to gain more gaming time. Between work, my daughter and wife, I'm lucky to get more than 6 hours of game a week. This is mainly due to not getting access to the front room tv, so a possible solution I am about to try is to take my ps3 upstairs during weeknights to grab an hour or so on the bedroom tv.
I know there are a number of us in a similar situation, appreciate any tips or advice to help us go even deeper with our balls!

Do what I do, don't sleep!!! That way when everybody else has gone to bed, the TV is available to play on, easy!

In the past I have seen portable gaming as a way of keeping my hand in. PSP, DS or GBA. I have little time for iPhone games, although there a one or two that I have derived some fun from.
Other than that, I find that gaming is quite a lonely hobby, most of the time. It's one of the reasons why I haven't bought many games this year. Other things must be prioritised first. Like spending time with the Mrs. I think that if I didn't finish work early then I would only be able to get an hour or two a week. That's why the portable gaming is so important. I can sit on the couch, talk to the Mrs and get some gaming on!

I too feel your pain. Work, a lovely wife and 2 bundles of pure, unrefined energy mean that I rarely get on as much as I'd like. I probably get around 6-10 hours myself - Not exactly a Skyrim beating amount of time.
Particularly frustrating as, in the past when I did have the time, I didn't have the money or the current crop of fantastic games to keep me amused (Sensible World of Soccer got a fair old hammering tho)!
As the consoles take up the main TV and indeed our main room, my wife will start to groan if she catches me gaming too much (and she's right to do so) as any time without our kids around is precious time to catch up and actually communicate!
I'm inclined to agree with guernica2, handhelds maybe the way forward for the busy Midlife Gamer, been trading in games and saving up for a Vita since the Summer…

Friday nights are my agreed boys night. Whether I have friends round or just crank up the console on my lonesome. The rest of my gaming is split between grabbing the odd hour or so on the console upstairs or on PC in the computer room… where I spend most of my time anyway.
So I suggest coming to an arrangement with the wife. Set a day/night that is purely for you and you give her a day/night where she can do her knitting or whatever girls do these days. Works for me, but my missus has always been understanding.. apart from that time she attacked my 360 with an axe.. just kidding.

I am lucky. My wife and kids all love their games. We play together a LOT!

I think its just being realistic about the time I have to play… I have a six year old and a baby just arrived too and to be fair my good lady has never complained about the time I spend gaming as its never to excess, she and the kids always come first and if I want to drop 6 hours at a time then I do it when everyones out or in bed.
I think the biggest thing that I have started to do is be realistic about which titles I pick up. I always used to grab everything that took my fancy and end up puting a few hours into each and never going back. Now Im more pciky about what I get and then invest some decent time into them.
For the next few months its Skyrim, Forza 4, Battlefield 3 and hopefuly get back into some Starcraft 2. I know its hard, especially with all the awesome games that are coming out at the moment, but I think if your trying to balance gaming with a family you will get a lot more enjoyment from dedicating your time to a few real quality games rather than dipping into everything that comes out.

Some good advice, thanks. Friday nights are my dedicated gaming nights. Vita will be a day one purchase for me, which will allow me to game during my commute and when sitting next to the wife.
Shatz, agree with your point about being realistic about the amount of time available to play and concentrating on a select few high quality titles.

You could try to find some games that your wife / daughter might play as well? My eldest 2 are both firm FPS fans (currently BF3), so gaming doubles up as 'quality family time' (sort of!). Beats playing scrabble anyway…

If you're getting the Vita, Gman, this story might interest you…

If this is actual and not BS, then I'm very excited. Not sure how easy FPS would be to play due to difference in contols but it would definitely be a way for me to extend my time with a title. Would love to play Yakuza games anytime, any place!
