Hello again Midlifegamers,

Its been a busy few months for us gamers and its only looking to get busier with MW3, Uncharted3, Skyrim and Assassins Creed: R plus a huge number of other games destroying the ol' bank balance, and it is for this reason that Me, Neale and Greg finally decided on the Game for Movemebrs GOTM.

As you can see from the title, Movembers is Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, Very Cheap, Pick up and Play and can be tackled in short bursts. I'm also hoping that theres enough people that we can get some multiplayer on the go at some point, as I remember that being a heep ton of fun!

Thats the Good news thumbs-up Now for the not so Good news thumbs-down

Now, whether you count this as not so good news or not is debatable confused but Movember will be my Last month involved with the GOTM (Podcast included). Not sure what Neale and Greg intend to do with my offspring but i know it has been left in very capable hands.

I will still be floating about the Site/Twitter/XBL so im not going to disappear but I have a few bits and pieces to sort out that require some more of my RL time.

Its with the above statement that I also need to let you guys know im stepping away from the community manager role. I may be back, Perhaps not as a CM but I sure as hell aint going away for good as I love this community to much to give that up.

So come on guys, lets make this a Movember to remember and get your thoughts up over the course of the month.

Dont forget, our favourite writeup gets the honour of a frontpage post on the site. So a great chance to get your skillz that pay the Billz (in a writing sense) noticed.

Have fun and thanks for being a great community cool

That is some sad news you've posted there frown, Discobeaver, your input will be sorely missed.  Just as well you're not disappearing totally however as the MLG Community WOULD hunt you down (channelling the Kane and Lynch vibe a bit too much there).

Only been a member for a few months but it's been clear to see the amount of hard work you and the guys put into the site and the community as a whole and I'm darn sure I'll not be the only one here saying a big 'thank you' for all your efforts, it's been v much appreciated. thumbs-upthumbs-upthumbs-up

Sure I have KL: DM as an unboxed PS3 Bargain Bin Based purchase somewhere…

Dearest Mr Beaver.

It was a late Friday night back in the middle of Jan 2010 when you signed up on MLG V1.0.

I just had a sneaky read of your welcome thread in the 'archives'.

Remember, your Xbox had packed up and you took it apart to try and fix it?

Well, its that sort of tenacity and determination that has been evident from you in all this time here at Midlife Gamer.

You are part of the fixtures and fittings of this place….and your love for the community has brought so many gamers together and has no doubt resulted in some life long friendships.

Always giving.

Always caring.

Thank you Kyle…it was wonderful working alongside you.

Lets not forget that it was YOU that was responsible for this:

Kyle, it's been super great working with you on the GOTM backgrounds. I'm not going to be too bummed though, because I KNOW you arn't really going anywhere. You'll just won't have to be working so much is all wink.

BTW,

Looks like the background has been posted. The Bob's Big Boy Easter Egg is back.

A nice golf clap will go out to the first person who PM's me with it's location.

Kyle, what can I say that hasn't already been said?

Thanks so much for making me feel really welcome when I was a MLG newbie and for all the work that you have done on the community's behalf.  The group photo that Adamski posted is something that will live long in the memory of all who took part.

You'll be missed but I'm sure you'll still be kicking my ass regularly on Gears and Beers?

Hi all flashed up Kane & Lynch, and it so far isn't doing much for me.  I guess I've been spoiled by the last couple of months choices, but there is a lot of clipping, and it just seems a vanilla shooter.  I still need to complete Batman and maybe will return and have a more in depth look at it soon.

Cheers

It's been one of those months, I'm back to work so gaming has taken a back seat, apart from Mass Effect on my laptop. I still haven't completed batman, but now owner of a 42 inch plasma – games look beautiful. well nearly, not Kane and Lynch.

I am so sorry, it was commented, it wasn't as bad as people said. It was, the game reminds me of Hitman with the graphical style but there is so much clipping, control system is messy. This is not a great game, BUT I have only played it in single player and I think it's designed to be a co-op game and therefore a big part of its ISP is missing to me.

There was a big hoo hah on a podcast recently about Hitman and killing policemen, well as they say in the sports news – look away now. I was fighting some policemen to escape a heist, I shot a female cop, not fatally, as I ran towards her she was begging me not to shoot her as she had a baby at home. So discuss, is that acceptable? Is that too realistic? Would it be morally wrong to shoot her whilst she was down, or was she just a video game character, but with a script?

The game just hasn't gripped me, and I don't know if I'm going to have the time or the will to complete it. Oh and another huge issue – PS3 version has no trophies. It is amazing how much trophies now mean to me as a gamer, not for any real reason, but to be honest put trophies in a crap game and I will push on and grind to try and prove something hear the little plink as I get a reward for my umpteenth head shot. Take trophies out and I now have little incentive to play a naff game – what's in it for me? Not even a trophy, then ram it. It is amazing, but I do remember that the 360 version had achievements so the 360 player has an extra incentive.

So my thoughts so far, wok has really picked up so I'll probably not be around as much, but I'll be interested in others opinions.

Cheers

Otto

You're most definitely right, Otto. 360 did have achievements which is why I'm revisiting it on that console rather than the PS3 version I originally picked up in my local sleeveless game bargain bin.  Will hopefully post something more meaningful up on this game before the end of the month but also juggling a busy Nov with some triple A releases (Skyrim…need I say more?) so making space for what is effectively a v flawed game is not easy.

However, I still think it's worth selecting games like this for GOTM.  Every so often, it makes me play a game I may well have missed originally in favour of best sellers of the past (cough…please choose 'Enslaved' soon…cough) and I enjoy finding out more about its less published background and stories in the podcast.  In K&L's case, there is a mass of back story and old news, including rumour of review fiddling – just have a look on wikipedia to see what I mean…

Havn't played it and at the moment there are too many awesome game out to start it.

This game will forever be remembered for the scandal that caused Jeff Gertsmann to get fired from Gamepot. On a plus side it caused him and a few others to set up their own site. Giant Bomb and their podcast is now essential viewing/listening in my gaming week.

Suck it Gamespot and your potenitally biased reviews wink

Sit down, Mr Kane.  I’d just like to ask you some questions.

Am I being charged here?

Well, maybe you are, maybe you aren’t.  Up to you to fill us in best you can.  If you can justify what went on perhaps
you’ll walk out of here a free man.

OK…let’s get started then, just means the sooner I get out of here.

So Mr Kane (flips through game manual), says here the first time we hear about you is in 2007?  Apparently there’s another fracas involving you in 2010 but, for today, let’s concentrate on 2007.

Fine by me…

Got yourself in a mite of trouble didn’t you, Mr Kane?

A little, made for a promising story being busted out of custody though…

Can you fill us in on what happened exactly?

Well…difficult to give you all the detail… things were a little hazy, people were speaking without moving their lips, everything seemed to flicker…

Says here you opened fire on the police department?

Hell yes, they were firing on me!  Didn’t hit that many though…

Were you concussed?

Yeah, I might have been.  Don’t know how else my aim could have been so clumsy.  Arm just felt like someone had nailed a long, stiff piece of wood to it – really unresponsive.  Felt sluggish, really difficult to set my aim…

Managed to shoot and injure some officers?

Think so, don’t what chickenshit gear I was packing though.  It said machine gun but I must have put half a dozen bullets into some of the uniforms and they still didn’t go down even though the recoil was massive.  It also sounded like I was using a BB gun rather than serious hardware.

Doesn’t sound very realistic, Mr Kane.

Well, like you said, I must have been concussed or something.

OK, let’s move onto the bank heist…

I was trying to save my family!

Calm down, Mr Kane, we’re just filling in the blanks here.  Again, there’s clear evidence here that you used firearms on law enforcement.

I had no choice!  Although everyone was telling me to be careful there was no real stealth option.  I was pretty much forced to off every officer in the area just to go forward.  That time, trying to get into the vault, I even had to retrace my steps back out of the bank and shoot a uniform left standing outside before my colleague would open the bloody door!

Again, I have to say the whole thing doesn’t sound very realistic, Mr Kane.

You’re telling me, and I haven’t mentioned the van we escaped in yet, must have had the worst suspension in history the way everything seemed to jump up and down during my little chats with Lynch.

Ah yes, Mr Lynch, your associate. Helpful?

He was clearly insane as his actions in the bank showed but he behaved as well as any of my team when given an instruction.

Not very well then.

You’ve got the file, read it for yourself.

You showed remarkable resilience throughout your little adventure, Mr Kane.

There are reasons for that – I got shot a hell of a lot and my friends had a shitload of adrenaline shots to get me back on my feet.

Why not use cover?

Yeah, good question.  Walls around here must be funny or something but half the time I went for cover I just ended up running into them and, when I did find some environment that wanted to cover me, I still ended up getting hit by
bullets.  You police using ammunition that goes around corners now?!

Sounds like you were up against it then?

I wish – like I said, the walls were pretty evasive. S’ok though because your officers were pretty dumb anyway.  I saw them dry humping walls that weren’t there and take cover behind features that were only knee high. Huh, huh. They
looked pretty stupid.

We can’t all be born with such high levels of intelligence as yourself, Mr Kane.  I notice that a few of your friends apparently stood rather obligingly in the open to get shot at as well.

I can’t vouch for them, perhaps they had a death wish or something.  Sure made it easy just to send them ahead as bait, especially as your guys seemed to spawn from nowhere when those mugs crossed a certain point.

(Silence)

So, after our discussion and all the things that went wrong, are you sticking with your story, Mr Kane?
Your whole adventure sounds like a very old fashioned experience, not the kind that this generation sees at all.

Yeah, I guess I am.  My story is an interesting one, just presented in an incredibly frustrating and rough round the edges way – I’m no storyteller.  The people pulling my strings in the background must have had other things on their mind, I’ve heard something about an agent 47?…

Oh, come now, Mr Kane, they say that Agent 47 is nothing but a myth…but who knows?  Let’s hope rumour of a second sequel for you is more unlikely…

(Game manual is slapped shut)

Time’s up, Mr Kane.  Nice try but we’re charging you anyway.

Broken promises, eh, copper?

After your two outings, you should know all about those, Mr Kane.

Well guys,

I'm taking one for the team here.  I am continuing the Kane and Lynch on my PS3, without even the incentive of a trophy.  I think most of this has been said, but I am still slogging my way throught the story – which I must admit is kind of dragging me in (albeit kicking and screaming).  I no longer think Lynch is a dick and he's starting to grow on me.

The gameplay, as we've said is awful, the cover system – well we've now been spoiled with snap-to cover, and leaning out for shots.  That just doesn't happen here, the detection is iffy but the AI isn't too bad.  It will try and flank you, and will sort of react to what is going on.  The Hitman heritage is apparent – with the obligatory night club scene with lots of people (but they all look the same), and they do panic if you shoot them.  It is quite hard playing – what is essentially a baddy – normally I will try andf make moral decisions, but here you've got a guy who is obviously a nasty bastard.  Someone who would normally be the target in a game, rather than the protagonist.  To that end I am quite happy killing innocent bystanders, in order to create a stamped to cover my escape.  Though there isnt really a stealth option.

The squad tactics are pretty redundant, and when you think this was after Brothers in arms and Full Spectrum Warrior, you just wonder why it's in.  The guys are good for reviving you but there is nor real squad control, its just go here, come back and attack this. Contemporary games had lay down suppressive fire, pop smoke, 'bound' , and grenade.  They could have done so much more with the squad dynamics.

Why no online co-op campaign mode?  It is screaming out for this, and I think it could have hidden a lot of issues if i had been done.  Allowances would have been made if you could have played this with a human.  I also wonder how the story could be done if it was 2 humans, there are instances where Lynch loses it and does some bad shit – as a human controller how would the game force you to do these actions in order to progress the story.

I am still of the opinion it is not a good game, but I should be able to remove it from my POS soon and inflict it on somebody else via ebay (did you hear that Matt?)

Hi all,

Working away so not as much time to play as I would like. I'm pretty far in now (f—-ing dumpster – took ages), the story is actually quite good though the game play is still as bad as ever. I think round about level 7 somebody discovered destructible terrain as now walls crumble when they are shot at. The AI is just a joke – guy 1 runs round corner to where I am and kneels next to me, so I shot him in the head. Then 3 more guys do exactly the same. The aiming system is iffy and the game is pretty easy, I like my crew – or bullet sponges as I like to call them. Big space, not sure whats hiding out there. I know order my team out there where they'll get shot to shit, whilst I walk out there and pick off the guys who were hiding.

Your crew are meant to be top mercenaries – why don't they just tell you to go screw yourself when you give a suicidal order. The other thing is you meet this guy who hates you, you want him on your team, and you give him a gun. What ??? Surely he'd just shoot you the moment you turn your back. I am also sure that agent 47 made a cameo.

I'll let you know if I finish,

Cheers Otto

When you're sitting there balls deepin skyrim, spare a thought for those of us completing Novembers GOTM. I am on mission 14 now so it gets worse, why am I still playing this????? I was trying to look over my sights, what do I get? A close up of the back of my head, can I move ? No, the collision detection is appealing, and my only consolation is that I have nearly completed it. In order to ensure that I am not the only masochist, I am giving way my copy of Kane and Lynch on the PS 3 to the first person, who posts the following comment.

' I cannot believe that Kane and Lynch is as shit as you say. let me share in your pain brother gamer, and I'll take away this blighting the history of games that is Kane and Lynch. After completing it I will spread the pain to another by forwarding the game on.'

The person who makes this pledge must then pass the game on to another after completion, who must make the same pledge to them, let's see how many we can infect.

As I write this note the wind outside is blowing at nearly 100mph, the mission that seemed so achievable may not be reached. I remember the task seemed so easy, but with the sad loss of Discobeaver at the beginning, the omens were there from the start. A small group of stalwart adventurers took up the challenge and continued on, we pushed through invisible walls, saw sights that would make people question their sanity and pressed on. before long there was only 2 of us, MaGe 1974 looked up with tears in his eyes 'I'm going for a walk, – I may be some time.

There was a message from him, and I can only assume he's made it, but he's gone. That left me, shouting in the wilderness, I sent out messages but to no avail, I had given up hope when the Baron mentioned co-op, I couldn't make it. my last hope of rescue had gone. i now write this note as the temperature drops to zero outside, I don't think I'm going to make it, the flag is in the distance, but I feel so cold.

If anyone finds this, tell my family I miss them and apologise to batman because I never got back to him.

Go towards the light Otto… stay away from the darkness (the evil ghosts not the game, i'm quite looking forward to the sequel).

Well guys. Thanks you for your amazing thoughts and posts. You've really entertained quite a few people. Greg and I have laughed long and hard at some of the funnies in here. But, all good things come to an end, and something should be shot at birth – And Kane & Lynch Dead Men is one of them. It is done and dusted – a very on and then straight off topic podcast has been recorded. I was drunk and Greg was randy. More than likely it will be released into the forum towards the end of this week.

The new December Game of the Month will be announced and posted within the hour… And we think we have it right this time round, thanks for sticking with us.

Baron.

That sounds like a podcast I want to listen to laugh.

If I'm being honest, it's been fun playing / mocking K & L this month.  There's always far more to talk about a flawed game than a flawless one.

Looking forward to the reveal…
