Well… my sexual obsession with hardware continues and after a few months of saving up I have just had a blow out on Ebuyer.  I know HunterVP and a few other have mentioned they are putting together a new system in the near future so thought I would document the build with photos and some descriptives once the parts land on Tuesday.

Im building an overclocked i5 Crossfire dual 6870 graphics card setup.

Ordered:

1 x Core i5 2500k 3.3 £175

1 x Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 CPU cooler (Overclock to 4.4ghz) £15

1 x Cool Master Storm Scout Case £80

2 x Sapphire HD 6870 1GB GDDR5 Graphics Cards for a Dual GPU Crossfire setup £260

1 x Corsair Force 3 Sata 3 128GB SSD £130

1 x Samsung 1.5TB HD £100

1 x Crucial 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 Ballistix Sport Memory Kit £30

1 x OCZ ZS Series 750W Crossfire Compliant 80+ PSU £65

1 x Asus P8H67 R3 H67 Crossfire/SLI Motherboard £85

1 x Phillips 24" HD 1920 x 1080 LED monitor £150

Should be here Tuesday so i will document the build with some pics and post some Battlefield 3 benchmarks when (if) I get it up and running smile

jesus h christ, thats a lot of dough! Any reason you didnt want to go with a prebuild of sorts (ie overclockers etc).

Did you really fancy doing it yourself?

I built a machine in August. Spent ~ £800 and I love it. The i5 2500K is kick ass, I also got ATI Radeon 6950 2GB 16GB of RAM and a SSD for windows to boot off.

Great set up.

That is some cheap ram. £30 for 8GB of DDR3, I paid double that 9 months ago.

Should be a monster system, might be able to play Crysis on high. awesome

You may be able to tweak it a smidge more, you could setup 2 of those SSDs into raid formation to get about 1GB r/w per second.

Well, arrived home this afternoon to three boxes of bits… started building at 17:00hrs and just finnished at 20:30… everything built, installed, OC'd and up and running… not even one explosion or electrocution!

Started by unboxing the Saphire 6870's… not going to lie, I was touching myself taking this photo.

Next up Asus P8H67 motherboard which slotted straight into the awesome Cooler Master Stealth Scout case.  Went for the P8H67 as its one of the few MB's that offer two full PCIe 2.0 x16 graphics card slots for Crossfire, most restrict the second to x4 or x8.

OCZ 750w PSU which vents through the bottom, really nice (heavy!) unit.

8GB Ballistix sport memory leaves two slots free for future upgrades..£28! bloody bargaintastic.

Corsair Force 3 120gb Sata 3 SSD 6GB/s and Samsung 1TB Spinpoint HD… the potential for porn storage is mindblowing.

Core i5 2500k and both 6870 graphics cards now installed, power up test results in no explosions! Hazar!  Just need to fit the Crossfire bridge and swap the stock cooler for the Freezer 7 so I can tinker with the BIOS.  Look at my bastard cable management!

After an hour of installing Win7, BF3, copying Steam folder from the laptop and setting up some Crossfire profiles for BF3, Dirt 3 and BF:BC2 its time to test!

This is my first crossfire build and Im blown away by the performance of the i5 2500k and the 6870's, Battlefield 3 on ultra settings Caspian Boarder 1920 x 1080 85-95fps (I found the game has a built in FPS reading Ctrl/Alt and S all together).

The Corsair SSD is awesome, Windows boots in around 15 seconds, I also have one in my Alienware laptop and it totaly transforms the system, only £120 on eBuyer now.

The Philips 24" monitor is great and the Cooler Master Stealt Scout case is absolutely solid, very happy with the choice and worth every penny.  Its geared towards LAN gaming which Im getting into with steel handles for portability and security to lock cards and drives in place.

Anyway…  Im off to tinker! Tata x awesome
