For me, the other two announcements were more significant:

- The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. Finally, the Playstation Phone exists! A slider with dual shock-ish controls underneath. Runs on Android, which leads to the announcement no-one saw coming…

- Playstation Suite. A Playstation Store for Android phones and tablets. They're calling it a "hardware neutral" platform, so you're not going to be needing Sony hardware to play their games. For me this is potentially the biggest announcement, as it'll put Sony's games out to the broadest audience. It'll start with PSOne games, with a licencing and QA scheme for games called Playstation Certified, so basically a phone version of PSN! What's the betting there'll be trophies? wink

Yep, well up for this one when it arrives.

More and more of my gaming has been on portable devices of late with me not being able to get on the main TV.  iPhone games don't usually cut the mustard either.  I want something I can really get my teeth into.

If you can play over 3G, I hope Germany's coverage is better than the UK's. Ours is shocking. frown

I'd expect it to only be over Wi-Fi, though.

It´s called UMTS here and the coverage looks like this (3 major providers):

It´s practicly only in the cities, but here around Cologne I see no Problem,

but never tried it.

Looks epic. Like Sony listened to everything people disliked about the PSP, everything they wanted changed and then just did all of it.

Really looking forward to this, fabulous spec and loving the look of the games.    Not that fussed about the Nintendo as 3d gives me a headache generally and like more mature games.

Concerned about what Sony will charge for this though, if under £300 will give it a go but over that would be tricky to get past the dear wife with a new baby on the way.

So while you guys were sleeping or getting up at silly o'clock to catch the webcast, I was working.smile Over here in Japan the 3G coverage is excellent (and I live in the sticks) so no worries there.  Now I know the UK often gets ripped off on hardware (the first psp was sold in Japan for 21000 or 25000yen for the "value pack" (strap, cover, memory card, charger) which at the time meant around 100 quid (not now I'm afraid!).  I am wondering what the price will be over here – some are reporting a price of 29000 yen – which if true, is me sold and getting in a pre-order!!  The Uncharted stuff has me sold.  Anything else is a bonus.

I am so in on this.

I had an original psp at launch and got sick of it very quickly.

The 2 main problems were: more powerful graphics means 3D games (whether action or shooter) and the lack of a 2nd analogue stick meant the game were either unplayable or cumbersome.

The graphics werent powerful enough. This meant draw distances were about 10 yards in front of you and you got little feeling of depth.

Both these issues have been addressed. People are pointing to the fact that the 3DS vs NGP is exactly the same as the DS vs PSP.

Nonsense. PSP had major deficiencies versus the DS. DS wasnt going for 3D games, its battery life was night and day. I have real concerns about what the 3DS is gonna do with its extra firepower that mean it wont go down the same route as a PSP.

To be honest, this is gonna be one of those gadgets I save up for. Even if its £400 with a pack in, which it wont be.

This looks like it might well be really, really good.  If it is nearly as powerful as a PS3 and works on multiplayer over 3G it could be many people's only console!

Of course, if games are download only they'll cost a fortune and I suspect it will retail at well over £300 on release frown

I was touching wood while I was typing it!

Seriously though, if its (roughly) the same price as the PS3 on launch, they've lost the plot.

I think it may be a little too much money on release for me. Realistically I guess it'll launch for around £300 or slightly more, which I would probably pay but convincing the Mrs would be another story surprised.

For me the fun will start a few months in once it's been cracked and I can start to run my homebrews on it…oh-yeah
