So the uk service of onlive has launched today available on your mac/pc theres a box for sale to plug into tv for 69.99.  Apprently will be available via ipda and mobiles etc as well.

So simply put is anyone going balls deep? You can sign up for 6.99 a month and play the whole collection of games which is for me quite tempting.  You can also buy or rent individual games and until 9th october you can get your 1st purchase for a quid.

I have signed up for an account thinking of going for the 6.99 a month if I got rid of my current rental company tho I think will see the benefit more in future as my pc continues its decline into the dinosaur ages.

Also theres one really cool thing that it does that I liked the Arena.  You can go in and watch people as they play on games on the service. Its quite cool to watch some people playing I think you can chat to them as they play as well but not quite worked it all out.

dudester24 is my profile if anyone else wants to give it a go.

Also demos are free if you just want to test the service.

Does anybody know what broadband speeds are going to be required to try this out?  I appreciate those living in or near major towns and cities should be ok but what about us pseudo-rural types?

Reading round the forums this morning, there's a lot of debate over prices being charged for games but I suppose if you could have access to most or all of the games for a reasonable monthly price that would be ok…

Like Dudestar above, would be very interested to hear what the MLG community thought of OnLive.

(20 mins later)

Just went onto onlive.co.uk, downloaded the client and had a look.  Things still a little broken due to first day gremlins but you can buy a game for a quid first time out (and this includes Deus Ex: HR).  I tried out a free trial of a game I have on xbox360 and even tried it on my 5 year old well beaten up laptop with wireless connection and was impressed that everything ran as well as it did. There is graphical break up at times but if I use a better pc or laptop and a wired connection I am sure this will be less of an issue.

I used to think that onlive would be a fad that everyone would soon dismiss, returning to their consoles but, having seen what I've seen on day one, I may well be eating my words…

you're not wrong. Fad / tech experiment / a nice starting point etc. I thought exactly the same about this. I have only been playing for about half an hour, but this is fantastic.

I have a gaming PC setup downstairs and am never off in all honesty, but I miss being able to game in bed on my PC. My lappy can run the odd indie game which is great but thats it. I played a bit of Borderlands and Tropico there. Theres pretty much no difference. I'm gonna have a good rattle tonight, its more than what I thought earlier.

Sure, the games selection is a little limited in the Playpack bundle. But I'll probably play a load of Borderlands at least even though I own it already on Steam and XBox.

Given I pay Boomerang 15.99 a month already, I could cut that back and invest it in this when my 3 free months run out.

A heads up for MLG-ers on their way to Expo this weekend.  Apparently, OnLive will be giving away a limited number of the gaming system set ups (in other words, box that connects to your tv and t'internet) while 'stocks last'.  This sounds like quite the freebie but have read about the giveaway on a few sites now so might be a grain of truth in it.

If you're interested in trying it out (RRP is £69.99), might be worth an early stop at their stand?

Have fun you lucky so and so's – don't forget us 'stuck at homes' and post some juicy Expo news on the forums this weekend!

Considering the load that must be on their servers for launch day I can't believe how good it is.

Unreal Tournament was belting along over wireless with next to no lag.  I have to say I think the bit they have really got right is the integration of the games into their service.  You can move between games really easily and it all feels very professional and well put together with all the tech crap hidden away behind a nice interface.  Playing trials of games instantly without the 14gig download feels utterly bizarre but also bloody awesome.  Also the Arena function is very good,  its the fact that every things instant which makes it so usable.

I found the graphics seemed a tad sharper if your running through wired rather than wireless but to be honest on the laptop it looks great anyway.

It can only get better, but for a day one effort…. congrats to Onlive for actually delivering what they promised thumbs-up

Acid test – tried to get on at 8 o'clock and not so successful…

First attempts got prevented from logging in due to high latency (despite using same set up as earlier) and then I was told that the OnLine gaming service was 'full' and could I wait till I was allowed in (still waiting).

It IS day one so I expect this sort of thing but the whole 'room full' thing means either their servers are too small at mo or the take up was bigger than expected – bit of both probably…

Tbh I imagine they were expecting a bit more a battle to get people to try the service but have delievered well and have got the rewards for that. Am sure they can beta the ass out of the servers but its not the same as demand from the general public and will adjust it as needed.

Now they just need to work on getting the games on the system.

I've signed up and am just waiting for them to say I can join in the fun!

TepicPlug if anybody is interested.

Oh, and a tip for anybody thinking about the PlayPack bundle.  Get your £1 game first, it seems that after subscribing you lose that offer!

Tempting but my net connection is terrible. I'm almost 100% sure it wont work…. or even if it does, the resolution would be so low that i would be better of just installing it on my comp.

I like the idea, but until the internet infrastructure in this country is of a high enough standard…. then many people are gonna be left out frown

Sign up for free and try some of the demos.  My connection isn't great, but it runs fine 90% of the time.  A bit dodgy at peak times.

Well i've tried it and it wont let me even attempt playing.

Unable to proceed

So yeah… apparently a 3meg line isn't enough, and with no option to upgrade in my area… Onlive is as useless as you like for me!

Try at a quieter time.  I have connected with a 2 meg connection.  Biggest problem I have is the server full messages.

Hmmmmm well if it is due to the time, then how is the service usefull? I mean i can only play in the evenings after 7 and during the day sometimes on weekends…. which i imagine would be peek time? In which case i can't see much of a use for this service confused

It is likely because they have just launched and have a lot of people logging in.  I intend to see if things settle down after a while.  If they don't then I will stop using it!

I haven't had real issues with it until today really where it really seems to have suffered I think tho its more down much higher demand then they were expecting.  If its an ongoing issue then it will fail.

I did a postcode checker for a generic post code for that villiage in Leicestershire and was given options of braodband up to 20 mb.

You should look into that.

This is something definitely tantalising but still out of reach for many…

Have same issues as everyone here, tried at home on my TalkTalk account and also somewhere else with Virgin Cable but same responses.

Cannot get on at all during the evenings which will definitely affect whether I persist with onlive as a gaming option.  Having bought Warhammer 40k for a princely pound it's a shame if I rarely get to play it.

Annoyingly, all the error messages that come back suggest that it's our setups that are failing but I have a regular 11mbp download speed, a good router and my latency never goes above 40 (Most assume somewhere in the 100s or lower is perfect for online gaming) so can't see how they keep picking up latency issues as one of my fail messages.

Browsed the US forums who have had  onlive longer than us and interestingly they flag up the same messages – latency, service is full please wait, etc. – not sure if this has been ironed out yet.

I really hope it does get sorted, don't expect it to take over from what we have already but it would be another useful option for gamers.

I've got the Mac Client (as I couldn't be arse spending a day in the queue at Eurogamer), and it's working with the Xbox 360 controller and working week.

I am lucky enough the have the BT infinity service which gives me 25Mb down and 8Mb up, and so far my experience has been….well ok. I'm yet to go balls deep and actually by a game, but I've played a few demos.

I've had a number of occasions (normally in peak) when it looks like I'm connecting via a dial up modem, then I just get the "Network Problem" and it drops connection.

A question to the people who have the free (of £70) console, what's the differences in quality between the App and the Console ? or isn't there any ?

Also, anyone who has an iPad, you can download the free OnLive app and do everything but play games, so the add friends, and watch them play.

If you want to add me, the Friends thingy is D5120 smile

Just checked that site and got the result of:

Standard broadband

Up to 8Mb (estimated speed: 2Mb)

which translates to 2mb broadband. Either way….. I've tried over the last week or so and have only been getting the same result…. My connection is far too slow. I did install the program on my laptop when i took it to work earlier in the week and it ran brilliantly. Played the space marine demo (30 minutes of the game) and it was silky smooth and played fantastic. Downside is that i don't get paid to play games.

So yeah i can see its a good service….. I just can't get the connection to run it so for me and im sure many others…. it's useless. Also it seems to be missing huge game releases like BF3 / MW3 / Rage etc etc.

The tech is there…. the infrastructure and games are not.

I've been doing some digging and I can say one thing for sure, if you have a bad contention ratio for your Peak hours, ie 50/1 you will not be able to use it between 4pm and midnight without major distortion and lag.

I've been in touch with BT and Onlive, to see if there are any preferential settings that can be used, or if they can set any traffic prioritisation (a la BT Vision) to give you a better throughput.

still waiting on the full response.

Since I am in the position where my exchange is due upgrade soon, I was going to do a little peice on OnLive, so I will either post my findings here, or if the forum gods allow, it may go up as a full review.

If you want to add me, Im on OnLive as DigitalPariah.

PS if you are with BT as an ISP, you get 3 months free with Playpack and PC Gaming also gave a code for a further 3 months free.

Any issues I had with OnLive between the hours of 6 and 12 in the evening have disappeared since they discovered issues with my ISP, TalkTalk (who, to be fair, responded with a fix very quickly).

Managed to get hold of a tv system cheap and this seems to run more smoothly than on my laptop (not surprising since my laptop is in its autumnal years).  Whole thing runs really well, even at peak times.  And because they were a few days late in getting my box out to me they sent me a code to get any game free currently on the system!

In case anyone is interested, due to my router being in another room, I used Powerline adapters to connect the tv box.  I got the 200mbp TP Link ones as the pack of two are the cheapest on Amazon, despite being bargain versions they work fine for me. You do, however, have to plug them into their own socket and not a powerstrip (like many others on the market to be fair) and the cat5 extensions come out of the bottom of the adapter so no good for you if you have your sockets close to the floor.

My OnLive tag is 'Widderman' if you wanna make fwiends. smile

I'm on it too, I queued for an hour and a half for the system at the Eurogamer expo as I'm lucky enough to have a BT Infinity connection at home right next to the TV.

Just waiting for the box………………
