Thought as we have the movie review thread it would be good to have a place for quick reviews of games we have been playing.

I'll start off…

Lego Star Wars : The Complete Saga     Xbox 360

Good: Its got Star Wars music and can be fun, would say it was easy but I had to use a FAQ near the end, oh the shame!

Bad: A bit buggy, had one bit where some bricks I had to assemble never spawned, reminded me of when I was a kid and would loose the bits for kits.

Overall:Oh YEAHOh YEAHOh YEAH/5

Dante's Inferno

After getting myself quite hyped up this game it was ultimately for nothing. Just over 6hrs of gameplay and i saw the credits roll.

There are some really nice ideas in this game but just as it starts to get exciting the game hits the brakes and says thats all with that bit, heres a linear corridor for you to walk down and think how awesome that bit would have been if it lasted longer!!!

The bosses and creatures of the game would make Giger proud but most of the bosses involve hitting X over and over till they fall over or pesky quick time events that take you completly out of the moment.

The world is interesting but it is so far fetched that it is impossible to take it seriously.

Verdict 2/5

Maybe worth a rent but dont buy it like I did!! it has since been traded already!!

I really like this idea and seeing as were getting more members interest in getting opinions known this would make a really good place to do that.

The above 2 are great examples of what we want, try to keep them short and snappy and you can put any game up you want. new release or old.

Get to it community thumbs-up

You're so wise… Like a minature Buddha covered in hair!

Since I just finished the game last night.

Infamous 2

Open world superhero game. Use you nifty electrical powers for good or evil to gain new and interesting powers to defend New Orleans (or whatever it's called) from the imminent arrival of "The Beast".

Good:

  • The traversal system is really smooth and easy. Clambering up buildings and moving about the city is fluid and al lot of fun.
  • The combat system is cool with decent new powers (Ionic tornado being my favourite), a new melle system and a ton of enemies.
  • New Ice and Fire powers depending on your evil/good meter.
  • GIANT monsters.
  • A lenghty game weighing in at over 30 hours to find all the collectibles and do all the missions including side missions.
  • Graphics are a lot brighter and varied this time round.

Bad:

  • Plot is a bit naff and the main character is totally bland.
  • 99% of the user generated missions are a pile of S**t.

Overall it's a bit rough round the edges but is probably up there with the best open world action games out at the moment.

Star Ocean the Last Hope – International. (PS3)

Good: Great characters, beautiful scenery and very rewarding game play.
The 'international' part of the title refers to the fact it has the original Japanese Language with English subs.. awesome.

Bad: Very large maps that are difficult to navigate.. too many dead ends and the inability to scroll the map doesn't help the flow of the game. A quick travel later in the game would have been a good thing.

Overall.. definitely worth putting up with the big maps because the the game is beautifully crafted. Challenging battles and even some grinding if that's you're thing, but if not.. then prepare to have your teeth kicked in.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Prequel to the sci-fi Classic Deus Ex. Upgrade yourself from human to super human with nano-augmentations.

Good:

  • The story and atmosphere in the game is superb.
  • A wealth of ways to play from stealthy to run and gun. I preferred the ninja hacker route.
  • Large hub worlds with a lots of areas to explore and gain experience points.
  • A large number of types of Augmentations from the mega useful to the useless.
  • A lenghty game weighing in at over 20 plus hours to find all the collectibles and do all the missions including side missions.
  • Graphics are a wonderful shade of gold and black with Bladerunner aesthetics.
  • Floof (a floor and a roof)- such a wonderful name. awesome

Bad:

  • Boss Battles can be annoying because they force you to go all action. (apart from the final boss which you can actually hack to defeat)
  • The last mission does an Uncharted on you by changing the enemy in an annoying way.

Overall it's a fantastic game with a few flaws.

Gears of War 3 – Single Player

Finished the fight, remained Brothers to the end and a hoard of other taglines about shooters. Took 12 hours which is pretty decent length.

Pros

* Gameplay is still as fantastic as before.

* Graphics are gorgeous and not just brown.

* Good enemy variety.

* The bit when Mad World plays cry

* The menu system contains the motherload of stats which is fantastic for tracking everything in the game.

Cons

* Pacing is a bit off and has a couple of lulls in it.

* On Hardcore it is a hell of a lot easier than the previous games. I hate to think what normal or casual is like.

* Nice to have a ending, but it leaves too many questions left over.

Torchlight- Xbox 360

Just beat the final boss so …

   Good :-

* Looks good

* Lots of nice loot

* Well thought out  controls for console play

* Pet

*A lot like Diablo 2

   Bad :-

* lack of variety, only three classes.

* Last boss is stupidly hard compared to the rest of the game

* Not as good as Diablo 2

 Overall:-

The good controls make this a rare good diablo clone on consoles 4/5 thumbs-up

Rage (Single Player)

RAGE is ID Software's latest shooter. It uses the ID Tech 5 engine to render Mega Textures to look fantastic (not without it's problems though) and maintains a 60 fps rate through the game meaning it runs smooth as a baby's bottom.

Story

Set in a post apocalyptic world where you are an Ark survivor (basically you were buried underground after an asteroid strike). You wake to a world overrun by mutants, destroyed cities and Mad Max style settlers and gangs.

You meet up with John Goodman and immediately start doing tasks for random people and shooting a hell of a lot of mutants.

Gameplay

It is a weird mix of racing, RPG-lite and corridor shooting.

It fakes you with the overworld that it will be a Fallout type RPG, but it's very basic. However these parts are all mainly distractions to do between missions. The vast majority of the game involves driving to a dungeon type level and corridor shooting your way to the objective and back. i.e A typical ID Shooter.

Graphics

The graphics are amazing when you stand still and it maintains a 60 fps at all times meaning it moves very smooth. However when you enter an area and when you turn round fast there is a noticeable lag on the textures meaning they seem to load in a second too slow. It's not a huge problem, but it can be distracting.

The best bit of the graphics is the animations of the enemies and characters. All the AI characters have been individually animated for each bit of audio making them move realistically depending on their speech. The enemies leap, roll and dodge with impressive skill making killing them all the more satisfying.

The bigger bosses are impressive and considering it never drops frame rate it all moves fantastically.

Overall

I was impressed with the game. The shooting is massively enjoyable, with a wide array of weapons that have multiple ammo types meaning that customising the way you like to play is a lot of fun. Personally I liked to go with the Shotgun for mutants as they get close pretty fast, the Authority rifle for all other types of enemies and the wingstick as the alternate fire.

The Wingstick is my favourite toy in the game. It's a glave type throwing device (Think the movie Krull) that spins at an enemy, bouncing off surfaces and decapitating them as they run towards you. It never gets old and just gets better with the advanced model you get later in the game.

While the story is functional and the atmosphere in the game is great. It seriously loses it towards the end making me think that the game was rushed. It has a disappointing last few missions and it felt very rushed. The expected final boss battle never materialised and the game just ended leaving you thinking WTF happened next.

It took me about 12:30 hrs to complete the game and I had a hell of a lot of fun.

Modern Warfare 3 (Single Campaign)

The Behemoth of video games is back for another year, but without most of Infinity Ward's staff. Still didn't stop it selling $775m in 5 days.

Is it bigger, better and more insane than last years action feast?

Unfortunately the answer is a resounding NO.

It's shorter (it took me 5 hours to complete one hour less than MW2), less interactive and instantly forgettable. The Transformers 3 of video games, all bluster, no substance.

To maintain control over the action the game funnels you by either making you follow an AI character or by putting you on one turret sequence after another. Shooting is seriously easy with the snap to target and shoot mechanic the series is known for and with it check pointing every few seconds its purposely doing it to ensure that there is nothing in the way of the next set piece.

It's a rollercoaster ride, that looks fantastic and has some exciting set pieces, but it is ultimately a soulless experience with it's over the top world tour of major landmarks under attack from nutjob Russian bad guy.

Assassins Creed Revelations – Xbox 360.

Good :-

Atmospheric graphics, did not notice any glitches but facial animation could be better.

Main story and gameplay still exellent.

Lots to do but most is completely optional.

Fun multiplayer.

Bad :-

Very similar to brotherhood.

Apart from the excellent simple deathmatch most multiplayer just devolves into mad running around (can be fun but not what I want from AC multiplayer) .

Not going to say anything about the tower defense and desmond sequences as they are almost completely optional and have little bearing on the main game.

On the whole an excellent game but very similar to brotherhood so if brotherhood left you wanting more you should get this but if you're new to the series get the cheaper brotherhood first.

thumbs-up 8.5/10

Saints row the third – PC

This game is bat shit crazy…. In all the best ways.

The Good: 1.Good open world to play around in

2. Lots of different activities to do to earn respect (XP)

3. Storyline is very fun with great returning characters and some excellent new comers (auto tuned pimps anyone?)

4. Combat feels satisfying and enjoyable

5. Driving is responsive and fun.

6. Dramatic storyline missions are punctuated with great use of music ( I need a hero by Bonnie Tyler is brilliantly used)

The Bad: 1. brings very little new to the saints row formula

2. Zombies are shoe horned into the game out of nowhere!

3.Gimp chariot racing only happens once!

4. My favourite characters from the others is barely in it (I stopped being subjective a while back)

5. Once the story line is beaten some activities become impossible to complete.

Average hours of game play :30

Marks our of Ten : 8.5

P.s BRING BACK JOHNNY!

Tim Schafer's Double Fine's Stacking. Unique Matryoshka Doll puzzler.

You'll love:

It's very stylish.

It's funny.

That you've not really played anything like it before.

You'll hate:

Overlong unskippable cut scenes.

Irritating music.

Can be a bit repetitive.

8/10 – Try the demo!
