Revisiting Red Dead

As most of you know, I spent a lot of time with Red Dead Redemption on the PS3 last year.

I recently picked it up on the 360 so I could enjoy multiplayer with a different batch of MLG'ers. One thing I didn't expect to do was run through the campaign all over again. But that's what I've found myself doing. It started out as a lark on a lazy weekend afternoon. But as I started playing it, I began to remember just how great this game is. It's sort of like rewatching a great movie you haven't seen in a long while. You run accross it on late night TV and you're reminded of all the cool little things that made that movie so great. In the case of Red Dead, I have to say a lot of it has to do with the voice acting, but the camera work is rather phenominal as well. And you might start to think that the co-op missions defined certain locations, but I just replayed the Gaptooth Breach segment in single player and I must say I forgot all about that great minecart joyride that you only get to do in single player.

I've even found myself playing the game differently. I'm not so hung up about the morality of Marsten this time around, I'm thinking I may do the Wrong thing in all the I Know You stranger missions. And after seeing that racist shopkeeper get his just deserts in the Undead Nightmare DLC, I'm not so gung ho about my campaign to kill him off ever three days. I know I've stood my ground moraly with that guy and that Rockstar has aknowlaged he's a racist despot. I think this time I'm just going to let the story fold over me and not get to ODC about shit. Just sit back and enjoy the acting and the unique gameplay of the single player missions. It's also more casual for me because of all the grinding I've done in Multiplayer has helpped me to be better at the single player game. Where in the past, I may have stood in the back looting bodies while the other NPC's did a lot of the work, now I feel like I'm a true gunslinger and taking the front line of every gun battle. Looting's for cowards, if I need some money I'll go hunt a bear or clean out those buffalo heards I was such a bleeding heart for saving the last time.

Right now I'm thinking about seeing if I'd break the game by killing off all the buffalo before there's a story mission that comment's on them, just to see if it changes the cut scene, or if some buffalo come back from exctinction for the scene.

Brother Brown says I'm a massocist for replaying such a long ass game, but to be honest, I've been getting nothing but pleasure from revisiting this gem of a game.
