A few weeks ago I was looking through the Onlive Playpack bundle and found Saints Row 2, I had never really cared for any of the Saints row series since I've always been a GTA lad but I decided to give it a go and was plesantly surprised by sense of humour, generally crazy themes and decent gameplay so I decided to go for a punt and buy Saints Row the Third and I was just wondering what you guys thought of the series?

I’m half tempted with the third instalment since I liked the others so far. The previous games had some great online modes but were ruined by masses of cheaters (have a search on YouTube) and generally asshole players all wanting to act 'gangsta' as the kids would say. You think Call of Duty on Christmas morning is bad? Try Saints Row.
My only concern though is that the third game has become too sandbox, more "look at all this weird stuff you can do" rather than "and this is how all that weird stuff fits into the missions" sort of thing. A lot of style but perhaps lacking in substance? Driving around town with a zombie in your car is all good and well but unless it adds something vital to the game then chances are I won’t be doing it.

From what i've seen of gameplay footage the zombie in a car has some particular story relevance due to who it was before the whole death thing. I think saints row the third will be a nice palate cleanser between all the serious games out at the moment so a little crazy madness should prove a nice change instead of the heavy going shooters and such.

Just picked this up for £29.95 from TheGameCollection.net. Never heard of them before but their customer service team seems to be based in Swansea so if they're shipping from there as well I could get it as early as Wednesday.
Or I could just walk down the road and pick it up tomorrow if they'd let me

Spent an hour or two on this tonight and while its fun it does feel very much three years too late with slightly sluggish controls, dumb AI and average visuals. I’m liking it but so far it feels more like Saints Row 2.5 than Saints Row 3, not worth the full price tag some places are asking.
And for some reason the sound is so quiet even with my volume turned up high.

With tea firmly in my belly let me elaborate.
Yes its fun in the ridiculous sense that Saints Row is renowned for. The Professor Genki missions are a hoot and other side missions are a welcome addition but the whole design feels old to the point of being outdated. There is still that problem of cars not spawning when you need them (cue long stretches of empty road), player character models getting stuck in the landscape, civilian vehicles making sudden 90 degree turns into you or coming to a dead halt the second you hit them from behind. One of the earlier missions set in a clothes shop just feels so forced into the game engine that it hurts.
Maybe these are all part of the design, maybe this is how things were planned but I was having these gripes with San Andreas back in 2004 and I’m disappointed to still be having them now. I’m a fussy git, I worked in design years ago so it annoys me to see developers make this silly and often lazy mistakes.
But its fun, just old fashioned fun.

Burt Reynolds is in the game. I don't care for anyones problems with the game when old smokey and the bandit turns up.

Then you'd better not blink or you'll miss him.
Just got my platinum for this so I thought I’d look back over my initial reactions. The main story missions were good fun; from a Tron-like virtual reality mission to blazing around the city fighting off cops and gang members with Bonnie Tyler’s Holding Out For A Hero blasting from the radio, each one left me grinning at the sheer craziness of what was being asked of you. On the downside some missions are nothing more than cut scenes while others act as introductions to the activities which somehow do not feel as much fun this time around. Still the upgrades are nice (you’ll be a rocket wielding bullet proof Steampunk chick in no time) and character customisation goes deep enough to make your gangster feel suitably unique.
I still consider this a rehash more than an update though. There are still long spells of empty roads where cars don’t spawn, off the rails AI behaviour or just bad habits that should have been dropped by now. Survivor missions (essentially horde mode) are a good example; groups of three enemies attack at ten second intervals meaning for a long time you’ll be stood around waiting for all the action to happen. It’s like the past couple of years never happened and we’re stuck with the same technical limitations as before. There was a good amount of improvements between the first and second games but this time around it feels like we’re still playing number two with a new set of colour pallets, there just doesn’t seem to be anything new that justifies the wait.
Grab it for sub £20 and you’ll welcome it, anything more and it may leave a sour taste albeit one you’ll have no doubt tasted before.

It sure is, just get some banjo music in the background and you've got some Golden age Reynolds right there.
I'm just going to have to ask what voice people choose for their character, I of course went with the Danny Dyer/Jason Stathom British accent as that's what real criminals sound like.
