Keep the Game of the Year discussion going, guys. The front page post will be a video run-down of 5 honourable mentions and then the Game of the Year based on suggestions from the forum and other site contributors.

My problem is that out of the 18 games i've played and finished this year only 4 were actually released in 2011 so a top 5 is ot of the question.

If I had to pick then it would be Batman Arkham City, i'm sure Assassins Creed Revelations will be my actual favourite game that is released this year but i'm unlikely to start playing in until next year, i'm getting the collectors edition for christmas.

Im currently playing Just Cause 2 so i'm running about 18 months behind everyone else.

Predictable I know, but Skyrim is unquestionably my GOTY.

100+ hours played in an incredibly immersive world, no game this year has created this kind of obsession.

Also, in a year of great soundtracks and game music (Bastion, the beautiful Deus Ex OST) it had the best sounscape of the year too.

Can I just drop another one in here……

Stacking!

Now this was a beautiful game, simple and very pretty

The only downside was that I felt like I was on a roller coaster whilst playing and it constantly left me feeling sick (did anyone else suffer like this? or just me)

My 10 year old played it quite a bit without the side effects and loved it

So if there was a separate top 5 away from the big budget titles then this must be in with a shout

I'm going to cheat slightly and split it into MP & SP…

SP…Skyrim.  Played 25 hours odd on the 360 before giving in and picking it up on the PC and being blown away by the modding community and what they're putting out there.

MP…Battlefield 3.  Still the most superb fun you can have online IMO.  Bothing rewards team play quite like it and, when the sh*t hits the fan, no other game comes as close to replicating war.  Some rounds i've played have lasted over an hour (and thats before we change sides!).  And it's hosted some of my most epic gaming sessions this year.

Honourable mentions go to Dark Souls, Alpha Protocol, Enslaved (although those 2 might have been 2010 releases?) and Beyond Good & Evil HD (just for giving me an excuse to play it again!). cool

Xbox GT: Vimesy74

Current games of choice:  Battlefield 3, Gotham City Imposters, Trials Evolution, Witcher 2

A tough one.

For me, there are 3 clear frontrunners.  Only problem is that I can't decide between them, so I suppose my list is as follows:

1 Skyrim – Excellent so far – am playing how I like, choosing my skills and adventures and loving it.  When I'm not playing the game, I'm thinking about the game.

1 Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Lived up to (and in some cases, exceeded) my expectations – having played the first on PC – these expectations were sky-high.  A shining example of how to treat a much-treasured franchise (I hate that word) properly.

1 L.A. Noire – This blew me away.  The facial capture and attention to environmental detail was fantastic.  The plot was superb.  Captivated me from start to finish in exactly the same way that all of the games in the GTA series did not.

4 Portal 2 – falls just below the other three by a whisker.  Excellent puzzles and the writing was superb.  I felt if there was a fault, my interest waned a little around two thirds of the way through the game.  Not enough to stop me completing it though.

5 Limbo – Stylish and unique.  Not the sort of game I would usually seek out but after playing it a little at Eurogamer, I had to have it.

I haven't added Batman:Arkham City yet simply because its still sitting on my shelf, unplayed.  I'm very much a person who can't swap between games, so it's likely to be well into 2012 before I play it – my current game is Skyrim.

I'm not sure whether Limbo should be there, but I've added it because I 'discovered' it this year.

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned, but the top 3 gaming disappointments for me are:

1 Gears of War 3 – Seemed easier than its' predecessors, plus my 3 A.I. partners seemed to be playing the game more than me at times.  Not played multiplayer yet, so am only judging the campaign.

2 Battlefield 3 – Single player seems very average so far and I'm having difficulty seeing how the multiplayer is any better than BFBC2.  In fact, at this point, I still prefer BFBC2 - especially the excellent Vietnam expansion.

3 Modern Warfare 3 – I may be in the minority, but I loved MW1 and, to a lesser extent, MW2.  I've played through the campaign and thought it was passable but far too sensationalistic.  I had difficulty caring about what was going on plot-wise by the end as I'd been battered into submission by hours and hours of explosions.

I can never really answer this question due to the fact I came to the PS3 late, i don't have much time to game and i am catching up on current games which works out as me being a year behind. So i will go through the stand out games i have played this year and if any fall into the category then great.

1. My number one game has to be mass effect 2 i really loved playing this game. The story was great and the fact i could be a bad ass and not a total prick. So if you push me or get in my way i will shoot you in the face or crush you with biotics. But if you treat me right and back me up i will go to the end of the universe for you crushing anyone in my way. I think mass effect 3 is the only game i will get on release next year and bump any game i am currently playing

2. The next game i really got into was assasins creed 2 this was truly a massive leap from the first one fixing many of the issues. I only hope the put the same kind of effort into assains creed 3 and not the slight upgrade brother hood was and revelations sounds like it is

3. I played heavy rain this year and really enjoyed it. It was really atospheric and in the fights really got my heart racing and I had a real sence of jepordy that i could lose this and the character would die. Which is not somthing i have felt in a game for a long time

4. I had a real ball playing darksiders powering through the hords of hell and the host from heaven. I am really looking forward to darksiders 2 and a part of me would love them to do parallel stories for the other two horsemen in their own games before wraping it all up in a last one with all the characters

At the moment i don't have a game to put in this slot so i will keep it a top 4

A great year for gaming and plenty of games have been released which will go on to be considered classics.  However having said that for me it is no contest.  Skyrim is not only the game of the year but one of the greatest games of all time.

I normally have a really short attention span with games and at about the 10 hour mark I start getting 'itchy thumbs' and want to play something else.  I have played over 100 hours of Skyrim and there is still so much I need to do.

The graphics, sound design and music are absolutely spot on and whilst the dragon fights get a bit easy I still get a real kick out of them.  I so often found my self stopping and just looking at the scenery, weather or sky.  Just amazing.

Ok this year was really really hard and there were a lot of games that I just did not find time to play,
so they had not chance to get to this list (Dead Space 2, Uncharted 3, Zelda Skyward Sword…).

OK here we go:

1. Has to be Dark Souls, it has me gripped like no other this year, I "enjoyed" every bit. As hard as it was,
the satisfaction that you got by defeating the next boss is par to nothing. It was one of those were you keep
thinking about it even at work. And even after finishing the first playthough I still enjoy seeing Lets plays on Youtube
too see how others handeled themself. The only negativ thing was the ending of the story, without spoilers, it was
VERY anticlimactic….but Dark Souls is not about the end it is about your path.

2. It was close but it has to go to Portal 2. One of the few games I did finish this year. Loved it on PS3, was impressed at the
amount of content and got it free for PC with that code thingy. There is no other game that lets You feel like a friggin Genius wink

3. OK Skyrim it is and the third place is were it has to be, I already told you of my German problem not being able to play in english,
because both console version here only have German language on it…what do we have Blueray for?!? Also it is very much unplayable for
a lot of PS3 users, luckly I went XBox on this. But on the other hand it is a remarkable game in skope and size.
The perfect timesink for an old RPGler like myself. It is a landmark and soon will be a classic.

4. This one was hard, had to see the whole year and then I knew what it had to be. MORTAL KOMBAT! Damm that reboot is good.
Loved that 1 and 2 back in the days when I was just a teenager. And this reboot is all that I looved packed into a game with so much
content including a storymode that sets new standards for ANY Beat'em up. The game is banned here is germany,
but I never regreted to get it from usa. It gave me back the love for that genre.

5. This one goes to Batman Arkham City, loved it. It is bigger better and more of what I loved in Arkham Asylum. I am a Comic book Nerd
(ok mostly Marvel, but I still value DC) so this is a no brainer. I love the sneaking and the way all the villians are portrayed.
I love to see when they get a Super Hero RIGHT in a video game. So often those games are just baaaaad…..
Just standing ontop of a skycraper looking around at the city the lights the blimps….awesome….

Some honorable mentions:

Terraria, a little game that was released this year, seriously have a look and no it is not just another Minecrraft clone.
Just thing more in the direction of MetroidVania with some building added to the mix. A little gem this game is.

Star Wars – The old Republic, while it didn't make the list(just haven't played enough to say that), it still is better then thought.
Every StarWars fan will love this and for the MMORPGler like myself it is a bit of fresh air. The setting is something different than
all those orcs and elf and the story with all the voicework is a new standard for MMORPGs.
I still thing the visuals had to be better, but the game has its moments. Just play one of the space flights and you know….

Biggest fail:

Sadly has to be Duke Nukem Forever…. I mean nobody expected the pure genuis after all those years, but in the end it is only
a relic of an old time. I hope this wasn't the last we saw of him and somebody can reboot that series the way it deserves.
Still love to have the Collectors, it is a piece of Gaming History.

Best regards

1. Deus Ex Human Revolution -

2. Portal 2 -

3. Skyrim

4.? – I did miss out on a lot of the big hitters this year like Batman, BF3, Dark Souls, Bastion etc and I really can't remember many games that came out in the last few months now.

I would have to say Skyrim, although Battlefield 3 comes a close second for me. Playing both on Xbox 360 and they are amazing so i can only imagine how good they would be on P.C, especially graphically.

I don't care what that Oli fella says….My GOTY is Skyrim by a mile. Not because of the sheer scope of it. Not because of the superb musical score. Not because I've played it for over 100 hrs.

But because it let Guernica go shopping for recipe ingredients for weeks! That's all he did! Because he wanted to and it let him!

Now that's an open RPG!
