I have tried DDO briefly – I'm told its a good game but the graphics are UI are very dated, I never got that far but would be happy to try it out again

a captain would be good if we dont have a dedicated healer, alternatively I could go minstrel and you could try tanking with guardian or champ maybe

I already have a lev 14 minstrel I could use

and cagedthunder – I was online last night at the same time as you, keep an eye on your IMS tab in the chat window as I was trying to message you – I sent you an ingame email explaining it so check your mailbox next time you log on

Sorry I didn't see anything but then again I would have expected to see something flash up on the screen.  I do remember it mentioning something about mail last night but I thought that was something game related and not someone trying to contact me.  Should really read up on the chat system.

Just went to a mailbox and when I tried to use it, it said I must purchase a retail copy of the game.

ah I didnt realise the free trial had restrictions – if I remember correctly the f2p version will allow you to read emails but not send them –

what I was saying was the IMS tab on your chat window will show an asterix when you receive a new message, and you will hear a ding sound – it should also show up in the general chat window

you can add more tabs to the chat window by right clicking on a tab, and rename them to your liking – I usually have separate tabs for kinship (guild) and fellowship (group)

the only other mmo i am interested in at the moment is aion, which has been getting a lot of love on the podcast – has anyone tried this? from what I have read it looks gorgeous, but is possibly very grindy (like all asian mmo's I believe)

No worries I'll keep my eye on that, it probably dinged when I was away, I had my headphones on and off like a fiddlers elbow.

I've tried this out and might be up for this, but to be honest it's back to school this week and an MMO is a dangerous thing for the start of the academic year! Especially as I am a complete MMO noob.

Will try to bob on as much as possible. I'm a hobbit minstrel if that will help.

it would be great to have you along craigieh

I agree that mmo's can be dangerously addicitve, I have played them on and off ever since Dark Ages Of Camelot, and have seen a lot of friends burnt out by overdoing them

i like to think the free to play system will help players feel comfortable only playing a handful of hours a week, without thinking they are not getting value for their monthly fee – hence the title of this thread aiming for a fixed once a week group

I've got a full time job and three young kids, plus most of my gaming time is taken up by starcraft2 at the moment in any case

when people level faster than their mates the group inevitably splits as the level gap becomes too wide

so its very early days this, but if you are interested let us have your character name and I'll add it to the list above, cheers

In answer to your question Mikey, despite originating from Korea, NCSoft have a dedicated team of western developers who adapt and tailor the game to suit the western MMO pallete. Theres still some grinding, but nowhere near as much as you would expect.

If you, or anybody else is still interested in taking a look for yourselves I can hook you up with a free trial, which gives you 3 days, 5hrs or 7 lvls (whichever you reach first), by which time you'll have a good idea if the game's for you. Drop me a PM with your email address & I'll take care of the rest.

Now I really like this thread. Looking forward to reading tales of your epic adventures over the coming weeks. Hell I may even grab the client myself (for research purposes of course) and take up a sword with you guys.

If you do end up going balls deep into LOTRO then it may be an idea to have the thread renamed to better reflect the game, as opposed to the genre.

Mordor Monday, Tolkien Tuesday etc. but I suspect you'll be playing more than just one night of the week. Wink

Keep us posted guys & go for +10 Awesome!

I'm about halfway through lv10 now and I'm loving the whole ranged attack especially when you can take an enemy out before they reach you.  I guess that will change though the further into the game I get.

Just got myself some medium armour which is all good, building all those stats nicely though.  Still loads to learn about the game which is good.

Is there a timer anywhere as I think I might have clocked about 8 hours without really feeling it scary.

Thanks for the heads up on Aion Uncle Fista, I would definitely like to take up your offer of a free trial – I'm very much into the idea of playing an mmo 1 or at most 2 days a week. I'm not sure if anyone listens to the van hemlock podacst, but they are a couple of gamers much like your good selves, and the format is very similar to your show, with a mix of console gaming and pc – but they come from a mmo background, and play 3 mmo's each week on set days with static groups – they play eve, warhammer online and DDO at the moment and have just retired from LOTRO

I personally think playing an mmo with a regular group is so much more rewarding than grinding out the hours solo or joining random PUG's, and this way you avoid get too hooked and then rage quitting when you realise it's getting out of hand

Thanks for the compliment about the thread – I have wanted to get involved in something like this for a while, and think it would be quite exciting to start up at least one MLG guild somewhere, who knows where this may lead if there is enough interest – I will probably start a Lotro thread when things are more firmly in place, cheers

I have a sub to Lotro and have played on and off.

All my regular characters are on snowbourn which is a shame but I'd like to make a character Laurelin on to play with you guys.

What character classes are needed atm?

Let me know and I'll make one and play along.  I don't want to play a hunter or LM cos I have pretty much done them to death but anything else would be fine.

Come in in mate the dungeon is cold and inviting…

Burglar would be really helpful, or even a runey if you are planning on resubbing

I reckon at this rate though we may well have over 6 – the more we have the less class choice matters as we will be able to mix and match easier, although obviously we would need to split into more than one group

Just need to level up a bit.  What level is everyone at the moment?

cool

can I suggest that people aim to get to about lev 10 and then try and hold off until we start grouping so that the level range does not get too wide

if the free trial allows it people could always try other characters while they wait for others to catch up

I played for an afternoon yesterday and am a level 7 hunter.

Havent got it installed on my home PC yet (as my internet is only 2 meg), but I'm gonna be back on tomorrow day to try and get to level 10, and assess this character class.

oh another thing I meant to mention – if you look in your quest logs there is something called the epic quest line, which is the main quest storyline running though the game

at early levels this will be called the epic prologue – it is race specific, and fairly straight forward to do solo and finishes around lev 10-11 – it would be nice if everyone could get the prologue done and then when we start grouping we can all start doing the main epic quest books together

more info here

just an extra note..

at the end of the epic prologue you will be asked to go and see a certain Ranger at a certain Inn in Bree (trying to avoid too many spoilers!!!) – this is where the prologue ends and book 1 starts
