Well I think I got those things in the wrong order!

I signed up for the MLG Eurogamer meets without introducing myself!  Such a noob.

I'm Daniel, or PilarGore as chosen by Windows Live, and am officially middle-aged now (well–by the standards of the twenty-something I used to be!).

Like every male in my generation I grew up with video games: I was an Atari kid, and then moved on to Sega, then PS2.  I recently got back in to gaming when I bought a new PC at the end of 2010 and now play PC games pretty much exclusively.  I'll play pretty much anything–Call of Duty, Fallout, Minecraft and other indie games.  I'm currently working my way through Dungeons of Dredmor.

I guess I have to accept that gaming is my hobby now–and the only one I have apart from drinking.  So I guess I've just taken the plunge!

Take care,

Welcome aboard the good ship MLG PilarGore!

That's an interesting name…is that really what Windows chose for you!?

Thanks for signing up for the Eurogamer MeetUps..let us know as soon as you have some tickets/digs etc and we'll add you to the roll call.

So, back on the PC then eh? Well as I only have an ancient eMac I have to roll with the 360, but I have a feeling there is a healthy PC Community on here that have a Steam Group if thats any use to you…one of the PC MLGers will be able to point you in the right direction.

I take it you have a an (un)healthy obsession with MineCraft? Well, there is an MLG Land (or something like that)…I'm sure Jim will be able to help on that one.

Oh, and out of interest, how did you find out about Midlife Gamer? Via the podcast or some other way?

See you on the boards and then at Earls Court!

Hey Adamski,

thank you very much!  It's nice to get a warm welcome–I normally shy away from posting/introducing myself.

Yes–Windows Live really did choose that somehow!  Think it was when I had to sign up for GTA IV on PC.  Best I can tell, pilar means 'pertaining to a hair follicle', and gore means 'gore' obviously.  So PilarGore would have to be the gunk you squeeze out of a zit.  Lovely!

Got my tickets for EuroGamer today.  Friday afternoon, Saturday afternoon (all-day tickets sold out sadly) and Sunday all day.  I live in the East End so getting to and fro is fine–I'll just catch the District line!  I work near Earl's Court so I know the area a bit, and will be able to get there without any trouble.

Yeah I've really got back in to games since I got my new PC in December.  Practically addicted you might say.  I like playing games, reading about games, watching people play games on YouTube etc.  I get excited about new games coming out, but I'm still kind of catching up, since I missed out on several years of good stuff.  I think I'll definitely keep an eye on the PC news on the site.

Yeah I really love Minecraft.  I think that's what got me back in to gaming.  My old PC could *just* handle it, but when I realized I could afford a new PC (I was gonna buy a massive textbook for work instead!) I just went for it, and the other games followed, since all of a sudden there was no game where I had to stop and think, 'Will my computer actually run this?'.  Even Crysis runs pretty smoothly.  Another member mentioned his Minecraft server on the site, so I had a quick look at that, and it looks pretty cool.

I found out about MLG through the EuroGamer Expo site.  I had been looking at the recent E3 stuff on YouTube, then the ongoing Gamescom coverage and had thought, 'I'd really love to go to something like that'.  So on the spur of the moment I searched for UK gaming conventions, and after looking at the EuroGamer Expo site for a bit (I feel really lucky that it's near to me and only about a month away), I saw they mentioned that your site was having a couple of socials.  I surfed over, checked it out and figured that this would be a really suitable intro to getting *properly* in to gaming, rather than staying at home playing games alone.  As much as I am fine playing games alone, and as scared as I am of trying to get in touch with other gamers, I would really like to be able to, since I have very few people I can really talk about games with, and it really is (I have come to accept) a proper *hobby* for me.  That's pretty much it!

Anyway, thanks for the reply to my thread–I'll definitely hover around and post on stuff that I find interesting.  Other than that, guess I'll see you in September!

Take care,

PilarGore

Howdo and welcome to the mighty MLG Daniel.

Have you not been tempted to dip your toes into the murky waters of consoles?

Catch you on the forums.

Hi Daniel and welcome.  You really must invest in a console if you have any spare cash lying about as the social side of console gaming is the best part of it, well I think it is anyway.  But then again I'm a bit of chatterbox anyway but I do love talking to new people on the mic and you do find some really interesting people out there.  Its such great fun playing in a group too you're deffo missing out if you haven't tried it yet.  I won't try and persude you as to which console you should opt for as they both have their merits but you won't regret it if you do decide to go down that route.   I however only have the PS3 which I love very much I've never been interested in the 360 at all, no reason just love the PS3.  Anyway enjoy the forum.  awesome

I'm with Cherry Scones, I use to be a harcore PC gamer until I randomly bought a PS2. I haven't looked back since. Now I'm mainly a PS3 kinda guy awesome

By the way Cherry, how many platinum trophies? Dang!

Wow–thanks for all your posts everyone!

The topic has moved strongly to the question of console gaming.  In response to Brother Brown, I think I probably would play console games more, but it's all about the pennies really.  For my money I think I would rather invest in improved components for my PC over a console.  Having said that, I think consoles can be connected to computer monitors via HDMI these days (am I right?), so I wouldn't have to pay extra for a new TV too.  (I would never actually watch the programming they broadcast, making a new telly a waste of money in my eyes!)

CherryScones–yes I think you're right about that.  I like playing games alone, but the social aspect totally alters (mostly for the better) the gameplay.  But I have seen YouTube videos (think 'How to Annoy People in Black Ops' on Machinima) of people (mostly kids by the sounds of their voices) being really quite unpleasant to each other, and I think that might alienate me a bit.  Having said that though, I'm still kinda tempted. The other advantageous aspect of consoles was that I found having a control pad allowed me to get more out of third-person games.  I think I might enjoy things like Dead Space and GTA IV a bit more with a console controller.

I was always a PS2 person, so maybe I'd enjoy a crack at PS3.  I have a friend who recommended the God of War series to me.  Definitely *after* Battlefield 3 though–that cash is going in to the game and a new graphics card.  I really want to play that one at the highest spec I can afford.

Thanks for the input folks,

PilarGore.

PS: where do I get these signature-box things you all have at the end of your posts?!
