I thought we could post the films we have watched recently with a remark/ recommendation or Score.

Bronson – I watched this quite late last night… A really strange but compelling take on a quasi-biopic of the notorious British prisoner. Tom Hardy was great in the lead role in what could be a big nod towards his performance as Bane in the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises. 8/10.

I watched Limitless for the first time yesterday. Meh. Its okay but I don't think its was what i was expecting. Its a rental rather than a buyer (no offcene to those whom may have been given it for chrimbo).

6/10.

I'd say yes in the UK. Rental is big but i think quite a lot of people do still like to own a physical copy of something.

I think HD streaming is becoming more prominant in the US.

But with the whole recent Netflix fiasco, additudes could possibly shift again.

Just bought The Inbetweeners movie over Christmas and i would give it a 6/10.

I dont know if this could be a big part of that score but ive never relly watched any of the series and i was expecting it to be a bit more funny. But i would deffo recommend it as a rental.

Santa also brought me the Transformers Blu ray box set and i think i would give that a solid 8/10 with only the last film The Darkside of the moon slightly letting the set down

It was going to be an 18 but cause so many pesky teenagers wanted to see it they had to change it to a 15 frown

Transformers 3 (with kebab and £7 sparkling rose for NYE – ock and roll) – all robots grey, can't id them, too many people, but best of the three (camera almost stationary).

Half way through Solaris remake with the bloke from Return of the Killer Tomatoes and I it is anything but slow in getting to the plot points (haven't seen the origiinal). But the setting accomodates this "speed" quite well and  I would think any movie bod should give it a go. I want to see the original as I suspect it take a more Andromeda Strain approach to pacing.

Rise of the planet of the apes is an entertaining film, a little bit corny and unbelievable in places, but worth a watch. It even has the evil blonde kid from the Harry Potter films! The plot builds toward some great action sequences toward the end and the cgi effects are very impressive. 8/10

I thought the inbetweeners film was funny and a worthy extension to the series. Reminded me of a lad's holiday in tenerife i went on many moons ago.

Havent seen the latest transformers, but disappointed with the first one (even with those shots of Megan Fox) and fell asleep during the second one. Like mym1nd, i can never tell the robots apart during the fight sequences. I prefer the 80s animated film.

Inbetweeners movie I can give a big thumbs up – big fan of the show and the film didn't let me down as much as Kevin and Perry did….

Submarine. Great movie made even greater by the Alex Turner soundtrack.
I still have no clue why it's called submarine though, because it doesn't even have submarines in it!

I have to say that the original version of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is well worth a watch, even though I was late to the party watching it. I've yet to see the others in the series.

I did discuss it during Gears and Beers last week, that my son got my "Super 8" for my christmas.

I thoroughly enjoyed that movie, and would recommend it to everyone.

I highly recomend you check out MOON staring Sam Rockwell and directed by Duncan Jones AKA Zowie Bowie.

And if you want to go old school with moody space movies, Silent Running with Bruce Dern is damn good as well.

Ah, I watched Moon. Very good…probably even better if I hadn't seen the trailer…it contains a major spolier in my opinion.

I saw The THING the other week. The prequel movie.

Very good (not a patch on Carpenters one). The experience was spoilt by a shitty print (looked like it had been used to dust the cobwebs in the projection room) and the fact that the house lights went up as soon as the first ending credit appeared.

The film continues, after the first directorial credit is shown, for around another 5-10 minutes. This final section of the film links in very well to Carpenters movie…it was just shit that they put all the lights on.

(I did complain to the manager. Not to get a refund, but just a way of feedback so that it wasn't spoilt for others…but it fell on deaf ears!)

Sherlock Homes:Game of Shadows – Brilliant, not as god as the first one but still a worthy sucessor

Rise of the Planet of the Apes : Really great.. one of me top 5 for 2011. Well acted and understood the original Conquest and was definitely NOT like rthr Mark 'E'Whalberg abomination. Probably just behind

Super 8 – Excellent Speilberg magic. It has a real ET vibe about it.

Inbetweeners – Class. 'Dance to those girls' took me right back!

Captain America – meh. Looking forward to The Avengers though and there is a trailer for it after the credits at the end. This was all backstory and bad CGI

Kill List – Terrifying British film. I cant say too much without ruining it but it is great just don't watch alone!

Warrior – Totally cheesy film about 2 brothers entering a ultimate Fighting competition. I wanted not to like but but bloody loved it. Top Friday night rental.

The Iron Lady – No…. no I didn't see this… rather poke my own eyes out.

More as I think of them…!

Here is a bit of a guilty pleasure:

Over xmas The Golden Compass was on C4. Have to say the lore and full world they based on the book there was fantastic. Compared to Harry Botter, the fantastical world seemed to ooze depth and charisma. Unfortunately box office figures were poor so a sequel is unlikely.

Re the golden compass, it is based on the first of a trilogy of books (the His Dark Materials series) that are well worth a read.

If you like documentaries I recommend

1. Men Who Swim – Hilarious and heart felt look at an ex pat living in Sweden who joins a mens synch swimming team

2. Inside Job – How did the bankers rip us off?

3. Into Eternity – How do we get rid of nuclear waste?

All top class and pretty scary. smile

Don't see that many films as kids tend to hog the tv smile

Though got how to train your dragon for them recently and its very good indeed 9/10 for that.

Kick ass 8/10, bizarre but entertaining.

Pans labyrinth 9/10, another odd film but very good indeed and the best thing (insert Spanish name here) has done.

Got to agree with some of the comments above on recently watched films

Planet of the Apes – Not the best film ever but thoroughly enjoyable and the ending was set up nicely for a sequel.

Super 8 – Speilberg back to his best, really was not expecting great things from this film but i loved it start to finish.

I have also recently watched The Kingdom and although i'm still not a fan of Jamie Foxxxxx (never liked him since he ruined Miami Vice) I thought this was a really good film.

And, finally Avatar 3D – If there was ever a need to justify buying a 3D TV then this is it, Avatar was what 3D was invented for. The whole thing, the story and especially the effects had me and the kids well and truly engrosed (Mind The Lion King in 3D is also amazing)

Recently watched

Hostel III (don't waste you time on this crap, very predictable!)

War Horse (take ya tissue, your gonna need em)

Puss in Boots (Better than the Shrek films)

Johnny English: Reborn (not bad, but I still think he should make another Blackadder series)

Project Nim (a very interesting documentary film about taking a wild chimp and making it live in society)

2 more..

Drive – Man works as stunt driver and a getaway driver. What could go wrong? Gets VERY violent at the end. Great 80's style soundtrack

The Guard – Brendon Gleeson as a Garada in Ireland who works with Don Cheedle to take down a drugs ring. In my top 5 for 2011. Bloody funny and very un PC but with a good heart. Recommended.

thumbs-up

Submarine:

Caught this on Lovefilm the other day. Set in maudlin Wales, a young peculiar boy tries to cope with the befuddling insanity that surrounds him and the possible love of a dark haired girl. Clever and witty writing, great lead actor, good cameos but most of all it brought me back to the confusing world of secondary schools with their invisible rules.

The direction and setting really make it feel like a Shane Meadows film so to any fans of This is England I heartily recommend.

What Have I Done to Deserve This? – a Pedro Almodovar film which, like all his others, is about 'on the surface' normal people actually being a bit bonkers.  Set mostly in a claustophobic flat in a rundown part of Madrid, this film is an acquired taste but, like all of his films, contains a mad, dark Spanish humour that you'll rarely find anywhere else.

Oh, and Mission Impossible IV.  Not sure if it's because I rarely get to the flicks these days but I really enjoyed this for what it was. Perfect popcorn with several laugh out loud moments.
