While I know everyone plays games, or at least I assume you all do, I'm curious if anyone has picked up the Song of Ice and Fire books? Since I saw the TV was coming out I went and got a copy of the books and read the first one before I watched the show but I couldn't stop and now I'm starting A Dance With Dragons. Anyone else got into the series, either book or TV show?

They've already played the show here in the States.
It's one of the best TV shows I've seen in the last year. Everyone is great but Peter Dinklage who plays Tyrian Lannistar, The Imp is the stand out star. Every scene he's in is golden.
I went ahead and read the first book. I have to say the TV show is remarcably faithfull. I'm amazed how much of the book they were able to fit into the series. To be honest, I almost like the TV show better. The actors do a great job of fleshing out the charaters.

My boss has just read the first book, I'm up to Episode 7 (shit has just got real!).
From our conversation's there's little or no deviation from one to the other.
Peter Dinklage has always been awesome. He was in 30 Rock and was completely deadpan.
My wife only remembers him kicking Will Ferrell's ass in "Elf".

I had never heard of it until a friend game me the whole series to watch on a memory stick….. superb… Sean Bean played an incredible part and for a TV series I was totally blown away by the production values.
Highly recommended… just can't wait to see where it goes next, will probably pick up the book as Im not the patient type lol

Speaking of premium cable shows, did you guys get The Borgues in the UK yet?
Dinklage; Anyone see The Station Agent? It's very "indie" but a very charming film. That was the first movie I noticed him in.

I'm not sure if The Borgias has been on here, but after all that Assassin's Creed I don't think I need to watch it!

I loved Game of Thrones, by far the best thing that's been on TV for many a year, can't wait for the DVD box set so I can watch it all again!
I hadn't read the books before watching the series, and was quite glad I didn't, as there were so many unexpected moments that I think it would have lost some impact if I knew what was coming up. I've read the first book now and agree with GoddTodd that it's an incredibly faithful adaptation they have done. I'm now trying desperately not to give in and read the next books in the series, so spoilering season 2 of the TV show for myself.

MonkeysDad, I would say give the show a try. The characters while historicaly the same, are quite different in personality than from the game. For starters, Cesare is not played like an roid raging Peter O'Tool wannabe from the game. And Jerramy Irons is, well, he's Jerramy Fucking Irons. And Holliday Gramger is not only beutiful, she gives a wonderfull amount of depth to the role of Lucretsia Borgias. From sweet inoccence to cunning player in the great game. And having played the game, you'll have a better grasp of who these people are and and who they are to become.

I'd also watch this if they made it.

think i might be missing the point of this show, i've seen 3 episodes so far and it all feels a bit like Dynasty or Dallas. Is there more to it or is it just a medieval fantasy soap?

Just about any fantasy story can just as easily fall under the category of Soap Opera.
Stick it out one or two more episodes, if you're not into it by then, then I'd say it's simply not your cup of tea.
I'd also recomend avoiding most historical dramas like The Tudors, Deadwood, The Boarges, and Carnival.

Deadwood and Carnival were both excellent, and i wouldn't consider them soaps. Haven't watched either Tudors or The Borgias as i assumed that they were.
I guess its a fine line between soap and drama. I love Mad Men dearly but it often feels like a soap, as does the excellent Treme. But they feel like they are going somewhere, unlike soaps that just go on.

I don't know. It seems to me that all of the shows mentioned have open ended storylines.
And most of them have strong sex and romance aspects to them.
I think we're just getting down to a matter of taste at this point.
