So i`ve returned from 2 weeks vacation in Crete. And i can easily say that it has been the best vacation i have had in my 36 year old life, largely because of Geocaching!

While caching with all the kids we found this place we returned to 6 times in two weeks! all 3 families agreed its was a tourist free paradise. Here is the full story:

Here is the faboulous four! From the left to right: The primadonna, The furious, The cheeky and The brawlerawesome

Car parked, off to find our first treasure. (well second, i forgot to bring the camera for the fisrt onelaugh)

A bit of a trek but  thats what geocaching is about. Not sure the kids agrees thousmile.

The tip was "under a cross". Could it be…?

Jackpot! easy find for the kids.

Remnants from WW2. Kids wantet to go inside but mom wouldt let them. Dad had a peak in thouawesome

This is inside the small chapel you can see in the background above. They are all over crete and seem to be open. The atmosphere was crazy in there and even thou im not a religious man it really made me feel humble in there. Im not sure we where allowed to go in but the stupid tourist got the better of us. We didnt touch anything thou (honestly).

Oranges growing wild is not something you see in Norway. SO picking them off the side of the road was very exotic. And amazing taste aswell, mmmm

So this is the place we found. Its called Deres horse riding center. At start we where just grabbing something to eat. One of the kids was hungry and since we didnt know any better we took off the main road and headed into the mountais where there was this place. And we didnt regret that! The food was amazing, the hospitality the same. It was simply a little piece of heaven away from the hectic tourism that plagues Crete. Prices was fantastic too, we paid less than 100 euro for dinner and drinks for 5 adults and 6 kids!! 3 course dinner with complimentary shots after! Proper homemade cooking dont with organic ingredients. I would highly recommend this place for anyone going to Crete. You need a car thou. Only bad side is poor english knowledge but thats general for all over Crete.

After dinner we went to see the horses. I`ve never liked horses much but that changed dramatically over these two weeks. Kids when back to ride 4 times and us grownups had 2 guided tours in the mountains. I have pictures of that aswell but i`ll leave you with this before i completely sidetrack from what this post is about: Geocaching.

We would nevenr have found this place if we where not looking for a cache near by. It just shows more than before that the goal isnt nessecerily the cache but discovering new and exiting things along the way. I`ve found a new hobby now and try to do it as often as possible, i dont even mind going alone.

In august im off to Spain/Portugal and i will definatly be bringing my GPS. Speaking of wich, i am very happy with the unit you recommended. The HCx Legend is working fantastically! Thanks for the tip.

Looks like you all had a great time….and I agree with your sentiments for geocaching…you never know where it'll take you!

Props to you and your little gang of adventurers!

Lol I had a similar event when we were on holiday in France, we stumbled upon an old pillar box inset into a cliff face on the south coast,  I proceded to climb a 100 foot high cliff face to get a look inside as my wife and daughter looked on in horror adamant I was going to fall lol

It was worth it though… you could still see the steel mounts of the gun implacements on the sills… awesome…

Great write up Tai thumbs-up

Im going to Portugal tomorrow with a mate and im planning to get some Geocaching done. I have my Garmin Legend Etrex with me but i have filled it with caches in Crete and Denmark. Its absolutely crammed!

For the life of me i cant figure out how to delete all the caches in my unit. I can delete them one by one but there is a thousand caches in there and my trip would be over before i`de be done.

I know a few of you have the same unit as me so im hoping i could get a top tip how to delete them all in one go. Otherwise it`ll be a boring flight deleting cachesyawn

Guess it was a boring flight then eh?

You need to forget using the built in Geocaching function of the GPS and instead use it's Point Of Interest (POI) function.

Post up when you're back and we'll try and get you up and running via another route…I've read about folk having thousands of caches on their handheld.
