Went to see my Grandad last night and we got onto the subject of his service during the war.

He was telling me that after World War 2 he was deployed on the anti aircraft guns in Korea during the 50's and sanitry facilities were minimal.  Mid conversion he mentioned a 'Shit Knife'.

Obviously my curiosity was spiked so I enquired further, where upon he explained that their diet was so poor that when the went for a number two it came out like a solid stick so they left a large butchers knife next to the hole that everyone used to poo in to cut it off with.

My grandma was enjoying a bowl of rice pudding at the time and her facial expression really relayed her delight at hearing the story retold.

Does anyone else have any such lovely stories shared by their elders?

That’s great Shat.

My granddad was stationed inCeylon(nowSri Lanka) as part of the Ordinance Survey with the Royal Engineers.

As well as playing football with the Gurkhas (who were barefoot!) he often tells us of the time they went to see an Indian Strongman.

Of the various feats he performed (pulling trucks with his teeth, bending steel bars etc) it was the smashing of a coconut on his head that was the subject of much hilarity. This chap apparently just kept smashing a coconut on his head, even though after several attempts his own head was torn and bloody from the relentless pounding….just to show the British how determined an Indian could be.

Oh, and after the war, he worked in sales for a steel company in the Midlands (Accles & Pollock) and helped develop a new manufacturing process do draw the barrels for the Sten Gun, resulting in improved accuracy and reliability.

I’ll have to try and get some photo’s of him up here.

One of my grandfather’s served with Montgomery in North Africa, no funny stories to tell but he lost his right eye from grenade shrapnel during a night raid on a German fuel depot, he used to love scaring me with his false one!

The wife’s grandfather was a kamikaze pilot who amazingly ended up surviving after his plane was shot down near Okinawa and went on to become a fashion designer. Only met him the once before he passed away but he was an amazing gentleman.
