If you want another Batman one you can't go wrong with the Killing Joke.

If you're just sticking to Batman, you need to get "Year One". That way you've get the beginning and end of Bruce Wayne's story.
Grant Morrison's recent "Batman RIP" arc is great, but the whole thing stretches over about 5 different books and it's pretty dense stuff. Made my head spin…
Other than that, "Watchmen" is obviously pretty much essential.
I personally also dug Marvel's "Civil War" storyline from a few years back. It's smart, but not exactly subtle.

Me love graphic novels…
Lots of interesting stuff happening as Marvel and DC redesign their worlds but I'm currently exploring other options.
I've been reading The Walking Dead (Image) on a monthly basis for the past 5 years, a fantastic insight into the relationships of the survivors (tv series good but the black and white pages of the comic book beat it hands down) – up into the 80s now but previous editions available as paperbacks or 12 issue hardback beauties – looking forward to seeing what Telltale Games do when they release their WD game in the near future…
At the moment reading the CHEW trade paperbacks (Image), darkly humorous and a delight to read.
Anything by Alan Moore (e.g. The Watchmen) is worth a look, hardgoing in places but v rewarding, it's where V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and From Hell came from (As Alan says, don't judge the graphic novel by the films!).
There's loads more out there from superheroes to 'normal' people stories -
I Kill Giants is another interesting approach to the genre where an everyday schoolgirl withdraws from her everyday problems to battle demons (real and/or imaginary?)
The Umbrella Academy – featuring the new child superheroes of the 21st Century. Written by a member of My Chemical Romance but don't let that colour your opinion of a zany novel that's been v well received.
Hope this helps!

Really depends on what route your looking to take really.
You have all the established ones like the Batman runs and Marvel Civl war.
One that i read a few years ago and took my by surpirse was Y: The Last Man. A friend in my old work introduced me to the first one and i got hooked.
Its one of those that grips you.
Also the Marvel Zombies collection is a personal favourite. Only as far as Marvel Zombies 2 though as anything after that i didnt really like.
A couple of friends have mentioned Marvel Apes to me but i've never really looked into it. Sounds like an interesting indea though.
Happy reading
EDIT: Just stumbled across this 50 Greatest Comic List, the order isnt really important just a good way to find out about the more popular titles.

The Walking Dead definitely gets a recommendation from me. It's a terrific character story set against the constant zombie threat. It picks off at the point were most zombie films/stories leave off with the endless struggle for survival
But be warned, it turns out that the post-zombie apocalypse world is not the laugh a minute, mindless violence fest you might think. Some of the physical and mental torture the characters go through is insane!

The most recent issues of The Walking Dead (#85 to #87 I think) have once more left me speechless. NOTHING is safe in this series!
