Thought I would start a Movie post for all things Movie, a place to discuss likes and dislikes, turn on's and turn off's.
To start us off I would like to offer this clip.
In 1988 Tim Burton directed Beatle Juice, comming off the back of Pee Wee's big adventure, I love the style of this film.
One of the best sceens that gets over looked has to be "the meal"
Wonderfully acted and shot. After seeing this film (22 years ago!) I became a big Burton fan, in reasent times I feel he has lost his way slightly. All his films now seem to be over T.B.T (Tim Burtons Top) Green screen+black swirls+Johnny Depp & Helen Bonham Carter= New movie.
I wish he would get back to his roots,
Ed Wood
Batman
Mars Attacks
Sleepy Hollow
Edward Scissorhands
What dose everyone else think?

Tim Burton is awesome. Totally agree he's lost his quirky, gothic, macabre sense of style in some movies. Sweeney Todd was weird, good movie though.
The last movie I seen from him was 9. brilliantly done. I'm still holding my final verdict on him until I see Alice in Wonderland. Or is that one of the 'green screen+black swirls+Johnny Depp & Helen Bonham Carter' nonsense you're on about?

I think the problem is now he's a big name he's got a little more aversive to taking risks and so his movies tend to be mainstream with a little quirk in them as opposed to being quirky that the mainstream can watch.
He was a producer on 9 but he didn't actually make it.

Pedant's Corner – Tim Burton didn't direct "9", he was producer with Timur Bekmambetov (Night/Day Watch, Wanted).
Alice in Wonderland's OK, but not earth-shattering. The 3D's totally unnecessary and you can spot the shots they added for it a mile off.

I loved 9, fantastic film. You could feel Tim Burtons touch, but couldn't see his presence, worked really well.
Please dont think I'm a Tim Burton hater, I used to love his work. I agree with Rebel, he's become too big a name.
I wasnt able to see Alice in 3D, and I felt disappointed with it. I felt like I was watching his re-make of Wonker, dressed up in different clothes.
A director who I feel is becoming a "name" but I hope retains his integrity is Guillermo Del Toro. What dose anyone else think of his work?
Cronos
Mimic
Blade 2
Hellboy 1&2
Devils backbone
Pans Labyrinth

Guillermo Del Toro can't lose integrity in my book. Some people have it and some don't. He's just a natural.. He's writing The Hobbit 1 and 2 due to be released within the next year or 2.. I sooo totally can't wait. I've been saying for years why hasn't anybody made those films yet. I'm so glad it's Del Toro that's picked this one up.
My fav director/actor (at the moment) is Takeshi Kitano.
Violent cop, Hana-bi, Sonatine, and that one where the school kids are stuck on an island and have to kill one another to buy themselves freedom.. can't remember the name, can't be bothered this time of night googling. heh
Hana-bi (fireworks) is absolute genius. Like most of his movies he plays a character who's pretty much given up on life and has nothing to lose. So goes through the story in reckless abandon. To some amazingly touching, sometimes comic effect. Hana-bi is different in that it's his wife is dying of cancer so he goes out of his way to give her a last wish.. can't say more than that without spoilers.
What do you peeps think of him? don't let that fuckin' Takeshi's Castle pile of crap cloud your judgement on his ability as an actor/director.
Edit: Battle Royale! I knew it'd come to me as soon as I posted this. lol

I like GDT but mimic was utter pants, a lot of that is derived from the source material rather then how he filmed it. (he tried very hard to polish a turd there)

Ooh, Violent Cop…had it and enjoyed it…on video cassette…in land fill somewhere now.
Let the Right One In was one of my recent favorites….and I finally got round to watching 30 Days of Night (some great behind the scenes stuff).
Chan-wook Park did some amazing work with his revenge trilogy. Stand out moments include the autopsy scene in "Sympathy for Mr Vengance" and Min-Sik Choi's performace in "Old Boy" (corridor fight scene was inspirational!).
I hear recently that Warner Bros have picked up rights for the Script and are set for a remake of Sympathy for Mr Vengance.
+1 for oldboy a mix of frankenstein and count of monte cristoe with a couple of brilliant scenes and a lovely twist.
Infernal affairs which became 'the departed' awesome
Kung fu hussle another good one i havent watched that many asian films recently but what i loved from a story point of veiw was they werent as obvious as many hollywood films, after watching 5 mins of a lot of western films you can guess who'll get with who, who'll. die and who the villan is, ie they normally have an english accent.
Having said that Grosse Point Blanke and The Big Lebowski are cool too.

I really thought The Orphanage was really disappointing and boring. Also if you enjoyed Kung Fu Hussle, then watch Sholin Soccer, same main guy wrote, directed and starred in it.

This sceen is fantastic. You can see how the Wachowski brothers took a big influence when they came to the Matrix.
Also its all done in one take, the choreography must of been a bastard to work out.
From talking with folk, am I right in thinking this is one in a trilogy? Not in the oldboy universe, but by the director?

Pedant's Corner strikes again – Oldboy was released in 2003, The Matrix in 1999.
The Wachowski's have stated their main influence for the fight sequenes was Fist of Legend, which why they hired Yuen Woo-ping to choreograph the fight sequences.
I'm a massive Matrix apologist.
I like the "Vengance trilogy", but wouldn't want to sit throught them again.
David Fincher is a god.

Chow Yun-Fat & John Woo's The Killer..
Tons of John Woo's self styled slow motion deaths and gun fights.
If you like this stuff check out Hard Boiled and Face Off.

John Woo would make the list here, but he'd have to account for Windtalkers and Paycheck…
Hard Boiled is immortal, though. Just the poster alone was enough to "inspire" Shoot-Em-Up.

Speaking of moviefilms, is anyone else looking forward to Chris Morris' 'Four Lions'? I got all excited when I heard about it and watched the trailer but then I heard it's not being shown in Stafford ARGH WHAT so I'll have to move more than five metres to go see it or something maybe.
Looks like fun!
