Rules and Terms of Service

First off I'm new here so if I'm speaking out of turn please feel free with a hearty rendition of Fuck Off!

Anyhow, on another thread involving the anal loving of Two of our most beloved soap stars the topic of 'Rules' has sprung up.

I've read the Terms of Service and to be honest they look like something out of a Health & Safety manual.

The stating of the fucking obvious for the benefit of the 'employer' (hereto known as midlifegamer.net) protecting them from litigation from the 'employee' (that's you) because ther is an assumption on their part that you are too fucking stupid, ignorant or childish to conduct yourself properly here.

Frankly I find it insulting but does anyone else have an opinion? By the way, I'm looking for views and a discussion not a flaming or revolt.

(Notice how I avoided the word 'debate' there in the vague hope that the thread wouldn't get derailed on the 2nd post!)

Having rules that seem really obvious just means they're sensible. If there were stupid, pointless rules it'd be worse.

That said, I think the rule that tells you not to distribute child pornography is completely irrelevant and so obvious it's unnecessary. A 'no illegal activity or we'll tell the FUZZY MUFF' would be less silly.

Hey there Mojo.

I did wonder how long it would take for someone to start a thread like this.
Here at MidLife Gamer we've been thinking long and hard about the Terms of Service, how best to implement and also how to enforce when needed.

First I'd like to focus on your point about taking it as an insult.  This is really the wrong way of looking at things.  The majority of forums and communities across the internet have similar Terms of Service, they are in no way meant to force users to change they're posting habits, as mostly we don't have to worry about the content here.  However IF and WHEN we have to remove a post for whatever reason, we can refer to these TOS and no one can complain they were not aware of what was and wasn't appropriate.

The second thing I'd like people to think about is what has MidLife Gamer become and where is it going.  A year or so ago before the relaunch of the web site, the community was much smaller and easier to manage on the fly.  As we reach out further afield and obtain new members spanning continents, age brackets and ethic backgrounds, this is no longer possible.  Also to my knowledge we've had to put the TOS into affect twice since the launch, one instance was due to a complain from another user the other was a decision made on a specific joke.  On each of these occasions we've spoken personally with the people involved and pointed out our reasons and in each case feedback has been fine.

The final thing I will say is that I'd like everyone to remember where MidLife Gamer has come from.  Two guys who love themselves a bit of gaming started a podcast, then a forum, then a website.  Its still the same two guys who spearhead the future of MidLife Gamer with a close knit team who help on a daily basis.  We want to do the best by everyone and make this a place where gamers of all ages and background can shoot the shit without being frightened away.

Hope this helps, more than happy for people to discuss this, but please don't go to the level of calling any sections of the TOS into question as these really are set in stone.

Oh and I don't mind saying, there are other forums out there which don't seem to have any problems with ultra-violent, racist, flaming and just shitty content going on within their walls.  So if thats something anyone here would prefer, go for your life.

Thanks for the feedback Mr Mojo.
I'd just like to add that these Terms of Service have been put in place primarily to help the community.
Not only, as Matt points out, to determine acceptable behaviour (but we're all mature enough here to be sensible) but also as a way of protecting users.

If anyone feels aggrieved by posts or general behaviour, there is now a point of reference.

It is in no way intended to spoil anyone’s fun here or indeed insult. If we have to berate then we will, but its more about trying to guide and foster the good natured positive attitudes of this great community that continues to grow.

Agree with my colleagues on this, they're just there to ensure that, should we ever have a person rock up and start posting completely inappropriate rubbish on the forum, we can point to the rules and explain why the content is removed. To be fair, most forums I've been on bring down the ban hammer on members or posts without so much as an explanation, we're just a lot more transparent with what is and is not acceptable.

I have something to add that some of you will not like but you can't please everyone. So here it is…….

It's a Smoked salmon kidgery of peace. Alot of people don't like the headyness of the cumin with the saltiness of the salmon but a little lemon juice takes the edge off it. If you would like my peaceful fishy recipe of peace peace peace peacepeace peace

I hate seafood,  and I didn't read the terms of service. I just assumed I'd be dealt with on a per-infraction basis and I'd work out where the line was drawn from that. Generally I just try to do what Wil Wheaton says.

If you follow the Way Of The Wheaton, you won't steer far wrong. That goes for here and life in general.

Whats to discuss? If Mat and Daren want to give me a TOS I'll gladly accept it. Anyone who doesn't like it just has to grin and bare it, bend over and take the TOS where it hurts. If you REALLY can't take it (as Mat say's) there are plenty of other places where the TOS isn't flying around the place. This TOS is so hot right now.

I agree with you mr Mojo.. It feels like going round your mates for a few cans and being handed a TOS as you enter. But, I also agree why MLG should have them in place. We are all friends, but it's an open house.. anyone can come in.. Just wipe the dog shit off your shoes before you enter.

Wouldn't say i find them insulting, just a bit wordy for what generally boils down to a few key phrases broad enough to translate into

1. don't be a dick in our house, and we decide if you're being a dick

2. if we tell you you're being a dick and you don't agree, then change, leave, or be escorted out by matt and daren in ill-fitting suits

Because when it comes to things like harassment and sexual content, it's always a matter of interpretation and it only takes one TOS bashing mary whitehouse to jeopardise classic threads about rubbing your wedding tackle across gail platts horsey features while deadrie barlow simultaneously rasps filthy suggestions in your ear, drags on a lamber and butler, and expertly works your rusty sheriffs badge.

Although i do find L1 a bit myspace / rupert murdoch'y

It's about user-submitted articles for the front page, not just anything you say on here ever. They won't claim original songs and artwork you post on the forum belong to them, for example.

not a problem for me, never learned to read see,

having not read any rules since the famous 'me falling out with my brother in a pub over chip shots in pool gate' i am assuming they are pretty reasonable, there is no 'we will come to your house and steal your doorbell/kick the fuck out of you if you post like a prick' rule (hopefully)

seriously though, i don't generally like silly rules, but i'm posting on someone's site, so i guess they get to decide where any 'lines' are and when they are crossed.  and post removal on a computer game site is hardly oppression, i mean it's hardly a rosa parks style rules situation is it? get a grip!

4.18 JUMP AND MASS SHOT FOUL

While 'cue ball fouls only' is the rule of play when a match is not presided over by a referee, a player should be aware that it will be considered a cue ball foul if during an attempt to jump, curve or mass the cue ball over or around an impeding numbered ball that is not a legal object ball, the impeding ball moves (regardless of whether it was moved by a hand, cue stick follow-through or bridge).

In other words you can do what you like because its not a gentlemans game like bar billiards!

To be honest I have'nt read them… just like I have'nt read the XBox TOS everytime the dash updates or any of the STEAM TOS's everytime I buy a new game….. because its always the same generic page after page of ''thou shalt not… we reserve the right to…'' shenanigans which can be interpreted a hundred different ways depending on whos seeking to enforce them, but ultimately it comes down to ''Act the twat and we have the right to get shut of you'', which is fair enough.

Very good!

Thats about the size of it. Everyone is invited, but if you start smashing stuff up, you're going to have to leave.
